GS2012: Christian Schmeer: Do Not Look Inside

GS2012: Christian Schmeer: Do Not Look Inside

Graduate Showcase: For his final degree project Central St. Martins student Christian Schmeer used the power of negative suggestion to come up with this intriguing installation and book

Name: Christian Schmeer

College: Central St. Martins

Course: BA (Hons) Graphic Design

Category: Mobile & Interactive

About the project

"A box with a hole and a note not to look inside was placed on a table at Central Saint Martins in King's Cross. Passers-by who dared to look inside were picked up by an ultra-sonic distance sensor, which triggered a camera inside the box via an Arduino micro-controller, creating a series of photographs based on the idea of Negative Suggestion - making someone do something by telling them not to," Christian Schmeer says.

"After the initial experiments were finished, the format of a book was chosen, both as a documentation of the project, as well as a showcase of the photographs taken through the installation. After the large amount of interaction with the box during the Central Saint Martins Degree Show 2012, a weblog was set up, which will eventually showcase all of the photographs taken by the box."
