Image of the day: Different Situations by Michal Stroz

We catch up with Michal Stroz to find out more about his branding work for Different Situations ...

Computer Arts: Tell us about the projects ...
Michal Stroz: This project is branding for the second edition of the international theatre festival Different Situations. The layout is very minimalist, both in terms of graphic design and colour scheme, which is reduced to black and white. Both of the colours are synonyms of the light and the shadow, which build an alternative, minimalistic theatrical area for a performance. The conscious elimination of colour promotes concentration on the most significant aspects of the design.

CA: How did the piece come together?
MS: First the idea is born in my head. Then all kind of afterthoughts come to me over the following month and a half or so. The realisation of the idea usually takes much less time. While thinking of the project, many clues appear in my head, which I attempt to put on paper with pencil as soon as possible. I finalise the project with Adobe software.

CA: How did you get into design?
MS: I studied graphic art at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland. I find geometrical shapes fascinating and my creative process often involves eliminating redundant things. Most of the time I use one colour only: I believe it's more challenging to obtain value and create a living project using just one colour. I'm inspired by the overprints on everyday products –  especially those that appear least important, printed somewhere on the side of the product. My style, all the above, is clean and simple.
