Image of the day: New Albums Old Covers by Rodrigo Maia
Sao Paulo-based designer Rodrigo Maia has given contemporary album artwork a vintage reedit. We caught up with him to find out more ...
Computer Arts: Tell us about the project ...
Rodrigo Maia: It started as a thing to keep me motivated, to create something new everyday, as I was getting really bored with my full-time job and needed something to shake things up a bit. The brief was simple: reimagine modern album covers, but with a modernist or jazz-era aesthetic, relying mostly on typography and simple shapes and a tight grid.
CA: How did you put each piece together?
RM: I generaly start sketching in my sketcbook, then I take the idea to Illustrator and add texture and add shadows and so on in Photoshop. Each cover took roughly 45 minutes to an hour to complete. The most dificult part was to emulate the style with fidelity without it looking fake or poor.
CA: How did you get into design, and what influences you?
RM: As a teenager, I wanted to be a comic book artist and started using Photoshop to colour – poorly – my artwork. So that's when I started learning the software. Later that year, my godfather took me to where he worked, at a local newspaper; I started working in the art department and soon realised I was in love with graphic design and typography. My ideas generally come from day-to-day experiences and my urge to express myself through typography, shapes and colours. I want people to feel connected to my work; I want it to speak to them on some level, make them stop for a second and reflect on their lives.
