Image of the day: Welcome to the New Age by Adam Cairns

Adam Cairns talks us through his intricate and otherworldly illustrative style ...

Computer Arts [CA]: Tell us about ...
Adam Cairns [AC]:
This piece was commissioned by an individual as a gift for a loved one – to be printed on and framed. Each element is something that means something to that individual, but is extremely random when looked at by anyone other than them, which I think is great. It really gives a personal feeling to the piece.

CA: How did you create this piece?
AC:
It was pretty quick; I don't really tend to plan anything out much and normally just go ahead and sketch something to scan in. I then use Photoshop to clean up the lines and colour and will occasionally use Illustrator for linework in pieces like this. Most of the time is spent actually drawing the piece out on paper, which was the most difficult part – it was key to get the placement of objects correct.

CA: How did you get into illustration and who are your influences?
AC
: I started on gaming forums making images for people and it's my job now. It's pretty cool. My style is weird, different from the norm, I would like to think, and fun. My favourite artists inspire me: Phil Dunne, Pat Perry and the wonderful McBess. But I generally make stuff up as I go along to be honest – it's not much of a complicated process.
