Spraying Bricks
Through a series of short videos, each centred on a unique street art project, Spraying Bricks looks at the creative process as an art form in itself. And now it needs your help
Louis Jensen is looking for backing for an exciting new project exploring creativity through a series of short videos focusing on unique street art projects. We caught up with him to find out more ...
Computer Ars [CA]: Tell us about Spraying Bricks?
Louis Jensen [LJ]: "Spraying Bricks is a free-to-access online series which explores beneath the surface of artistic creation. Every piece of art tells a story. Art is not just reliant on the superficial final piece; the process – the thoughts and meanings – is an art form in itself. I want to provide a new and fresh format for creatives to showcase their work, as well as changing the misconception that street art and graffiti is deviant. Many people still have this view."
CA: Who has been involved, so far?
LJ: "As well as showcasing established artists, such as Smug, I've been on the search for new, up-and-coming talent – such as Brixton based collective Id-iom, who I stubbled across through a friend. They had the most amazing abandoned Edwardian building which they were painting internally, head to toe."
CA: How do you go about recording each episode?
LJ: "The cameras we use vary from the Cannon 7D up to the big-gun Cannon C300, which we shot the Ben Eine episode on. It depends on the artist and the time period, but I stay as long as it takes. Spraying Bricks is about the artist and not the platform itself. We use Premiere Pro on CS6 to edit the footage. The cold weather is only real challenge we face."
CA: How did you get into street art?
LJ: "I have worked in alternative outdoor media for some time, recreating old and generating new campaigns with the help of street artists. The dream was to change the advertising landscape and simultaneously create a public gallery of artist's work, endorsed by the brand in question. As time has gone by, this dream seems further and further away with increasing brand guidelines causing restrictions in creativity, undermining the ability of the artist and the value of their work."
CA: Who or what influences and inspires you?
LJ: "People influence me, in my work. Appreciation for others inspires me. There's too much negativity in today's world. No one likes to see other people doing well. My word of the moment is collaboration. I want to be able to collaborate with creative and talented individuals and fuse our skillsets to create something amazing for others to enjoy, bettering us both in our careers and helping each other reach our goals and visions."
