Inspire yourself to create better images by putting a better image on your desktop, from Computer Arts cover star Steve Wilson

Illustrator Steve Wilson certainly knows a thing or two about creating better images, and, unlike some illustrators, he’s not at all bothered about who’s watching over his shoulder as he tries out different ideas and battles with the creative process. In fact, Steve’s so relaxed about the process he goes through to create his trademark heady and intoxicating images, he’s just spent seven days in one of Selfridges’ shop windows on Oxford Street, creating an amazing piece of work.

Steve was one of seven creatives asked by the swanky department store to take part in a unique experiment, which saw different artists and designers working within the fields of illustration, digital design, typography, photography and advertising tackle an open brief to produce a piece of work based around the theme of “Shape” within the confines of the shop’s extensive window displays.

“My interpretation of the brief involved covering the walls and floor of the space, as well as several large perspex shapes, in vinyl-cut illustrations,” says Steve. The success of this recent project made Steve an obvious choice for this issue’s cover feature on creating brilliant images, but also ties in nicely with our exploration of the amazing work being done by designers right now in the field of retail design and in-store graphics.

When he’s not sweating the technique in front of millions of Oxford Street shoppers, Steve works on a wide array of other projects and has recently completed pieces for Coca-Cola and fashion designer Julien Macdonald.
