Give your monitor some good old summer loving with this slice of antipodean psychedelia from Drew Flaherty

There’s more than enough sunshine to go around in Australia, so Computer Arts was delighted when Brisbane’s Drew Flaherty agreed to share some. The result, as seen on the cover of issue 125 and now available in delicious desktop flavour, is a generous portion of summer loving that invokes feelings of optimism and renewal.

“It’s about the start of something beautiful. The first moments. Unforced confessions and undeniable truths. Anticipation and nervous excitement,” offers Flaherty by way of explanation.

Communicating this idea of a new beginning was integral to the success of illustrating our New Directions feature about finding a better job. Flaherty’s challenging brief was to represent the process of making a fresh start while simultaneously providing some upbeat summery vibes, but he pulled it off, and with some style.

It’s this ability to convey depth of feeling through engaging imagery that gives Flaherty’s work a distinctive identity and the painstakingly selected source material used in his illustrations plays a vital role in their execution.

“Finding the right photos is almost an artform in itself and I can sometimes spend as much time searching for and preparing images as I do working on the composition,” he reveals.

For this project Flaherty collaborated with the Milan-based model Angela Pai and he readily admits that most of his contacts are scattered around the globe, preventing him from getting more heavily involved in his local design scene.

“I wouldn’t mind becoming more involved, though. It would be nice to get off the computer and start living in the real world again,” he concedes. But with the chance to dream of eternal summer, the real world can wait for now.
