Avid Free DV
Powerful and competent digital video editing from the masters of the field.
If you’ve a DV camera then you’ll need editing software. There are some terribly expensive options available, but lets fact it, as long as it covers the fundamentals of video editing you can live without a colour-keyed composite scrolling matte.
Avid, for those in the know, is a very big name in video editing. It produces serious professional software for broadcast video. It also, rather surprisingly, produces what it quiatly terms a ‘feature-streamlined’ free version of its editing software. It’s ideal for casual home tinkering and compiling DV footage of the cat.
It has all you need: two video tracks and two audio tracks plus a handful of real-time effects, titles, drag-and-drop editing and suchlike. It may not have dozens of pointless transitions, but what it does do, it does solidly and professionally; this is by the same people who make software for studio work.
You’ll need to complete a registration form before you can download it, other than that, this is a completely free version. Note: it is Windows XP only.
