Alex. Whilst I am grateful that you have chosen to share your experience, please take a little more care over the preparation of your tutorials. There are some confusions arising, I believe, out of your familiarity with the techniques. For example; you have a 'Face' layer group which is visible in the screenshots and to which you refer, but the directions omit the creation of such a group; there is a 'Shadow' layer visible in the screenshots to which you do not refer at all. I believe also that something is amiss around steps 6 & 7 as the results are, I think, not what you intend.

You assume a prior knowledge, which is fine, and I am no mug with Photoshop but I found this difficult to follow, having to back-track a number of times to check if it was my mistake or yours and work it out for myself. I think it would help if you explained at least a little of what is happening at each stage and why it is necessary.

Alex,

I have to agree with John. This has to be one of the worst tutorials I've ever has the misfortune to follow. It all seemed to be going swimmingly initially but it appears somewhere between steps 5-7 you've lost the will to explain all the steps and its become a race to the finish. Better laid out screenshots would have helped as there are sections where your described method doesn't have the same results as your shots would seem to show.

I'm also not a complete beginner to Photoshop but my end result looks nothing even remotely similar to the effect you've reached and as such was a complete waste of 3 hours of my life.
