The one thing you guys seem to be missing out is NAS drives that allow for collaborative work / file sharing. At my work we have a Drobo FS drive with has dual disk redundancy (you can have 21 drives fail at once without losing any data) and is expandable up to about 60tb. As far as connecting it your computer it will connect over gigabit ethernet giving you transfer speeds faster than USB 3 in my experience. The added benefit of connecting over eternet is you can connect it to a router or a switch and multiple people can be reading/writing to it at once. It's no where near as portable but with it connected to the internet you can access your files from anywhere in the world.
