First of all well done Amy! I had a quick visit of your website and loved your illustrations. Full of natural beauty and old school talent!
Your experience of leaving university is similar to many graduates who leave with the ambitions of going it alone. As a recent graduate I can effectively say that around 40 percent of my friends from all walks of creative genius are also struggling to find work and it might be down to the lack of business acumen they have - as you've quite rightly said.
One way my university helped some students was by providing courses that had some kind of business module rolled into it. As a business and marketing student I noticed many sports science students in one of my modules on a weekly basis.
I'd also noticed that my classes were massive and there was no kind of register which meant anyone who knew that the module was on could just walk into the lecture even if they weren't on the course. So essentially illustrators at university could have friends on business courses and just join one of their modules when they have a free period to drop in and learn something. If you were to do this I'd recommend someone on an entrepreneurship course.
Anyway I'm starting to waffle but those are just a couple of additional tips for any illustrators who are currently studying at university and are wondering how they can become more professional when they leave. Amy you've done so well and hope to see more of your incredible work soon.
