Richard Butler graduated from Loughborough University School of Art and Design (LUSAD) in 2005 with a BA (Hons) in Illustration.
"Since then I have moved from a small sleepy market town near York to Edinburgh, where I feel constantly inspired by my surroundings," he says. "I based my final project on Edinburgh, and I feel my work has taken a huge leap forwards here."
Richard is primarily a reportage and character illustrator, influenced by strong linear work, architecture and simple figure drawings. "I enjoy taking my sketchbook out and drawing on location, then transferring my sketches to the computer, where I manipulate them using Photoshop," he says. "Photoshop has made me less precious about my work, allowing me to experiment as much as I want. And there are no virtual ink pots to knock over!"
WHEN YOU'VE GOTTA GO "This illustration was influenced by my home town of Pocklington and the growing lack of respect witnessed throughout today's society."

LEITH WALK "A reportage-style illustration of Leith Walk in Edinburgh. I experimented with text to give the road texture, and the down arrows in the sky represent the stereotypical view of Scottish weather!"

Owen is also part of design collective Sixredsquares, which he founded with five other graduates, and he lectures in graphic design at South East Essex College.
"I am in the process of completing my website and 2006 promises to be an exciting year for me," he says. "My own T-shirt range will hit the shelves soon, and I am also looking for representation."
URBAN LANDSCAPE "I created this illustration after walking through a grotty area of town and feeling resentful towards the state of my surroundings. I used Photoshop to create the composition and blend colours where necessary."

RAINING FISH "This is a mixed-media piece that incorporates elements of Photoshop and Illustrator with scans of hand-painted backgrounds. The work was for an illustrated children's book and I wanted to capture that sense of careless imagination that children have."

"Most of my pieces come about by doodling in my sketchbook. I come up with a sketch that I like, then I scan it in and work on it digitally in Illustrator and/or Photoshop, says Australian illustrator Julie Knoblock. "I then transfer it to board or paper if I'm going to paint it."
Julie has been illustrating for seven years, originally in Melbourne, but more recently in Sydney. She is now focused on creating more personal work for exhibitions.
"I'm currently finishing work on my first children's book, which was written by Tony Wilson and is due out in Australia later this year," she says. "I find it hard to stick to one style as I'm always finding new inspiration. But I hope that there are common elements in my work that bring them together and make pieces undeniably mine.
"I try to make time to draw in my sketchbook and I also like to just sit and think about what I'm going to do next. Occasionally, I'll get an image in my head and it'll stay there until I get it out on paper. If I'm not creating something, then I'm thinking about it."
BLOODY IDIOT "We have a road safety campaign over here that says, "If you drink and drive, you're a bloody idiot!" I did this sketch in my sketch book and he had a bottle in him, and he was driving, so naturally he's a bloody idiot! The piece was created for a self-promotional postcard using pen, Illustrator and Photoshop."
