G Letter
Gustavo Brigante
Location: Buenos Aires, Argentina
Job: Graphic designer and illustrator
Self-taught graphic designer and illustrator Gustavo Brigante took an unconventional route into design after stumbling across some unexpected inspiration: “I fell in love with graphic design when I played Wipeout XL and found The Designers Republic through it,” he explains. “It made me realise that I wanted to do it myself.” Unimpressed by the traditional academic methods of becoming a designer, Brigante began to learn his trade on his own merit, spending long nights studying different works of design and consulting designer friends for advice.
In 1999 he collaborated with another friend to create an experimental Flash website, which he is still involved in today. He has since worked across the design field, creating everything from logos to photo-based illustrations for clients. “I enjoy the chaos of the variety – I love to connect disciplines and techniques to reach different results and improve my work. Every piece becomes a challenge.”
G Letter
Brigante describes this vector illustration for the B3s-Alphabattle challenge as a sci-fi-inspired “3D exploration of the letter ‘G’ as a kind of planetary base.”

Blue Gold
Stephen Mellor
Location: Norwich, UK
Job: Graphic designer and artist
Norwich-based Stephen Mellor creates his abstract art using photos, illustrations, clippings and scans. After completing a BA Hons in Graphic Design, Mellor began his career with UK creative agency Spring – a move he describes as vital to his design progression: “I worked with such a creative team and learned essential skills for developing my work.”
Mellor uses Photoshop to layer cut-outs and images, adding colourful gradients to build abstract patterns with depth and motion. He describes his creative process: “I normally start a piece with a loose outcome in mind, unless it has to be made to a specific brief, but it generally builds an abstract feel as I layer it up.”
He highlights expression and colour among his favourite aspects of design. And for the future? “I’d like some big clients, maybe to create some album covers or snowboard designs and have a bigger studio with more equipment to experiment with,” he laughs.
Blue Gold
Mellor used collage and illustration to make this piece. “I was trying to create a mythical identity from skulls, precious rocks and indigenous people.

Miss Kee
Robert Tirado
Location: Madrid, Spain
Job: Illustrator and graphic artist
Illustrator and graphic artist Robert Tirado takes a multifaceted approach to design, combining hand-drawn and digital illustrations with graphic design and painting. He says he’s inspired by “female beauty” and photography, and names music, art, geometry and fashion among his other influences.
Tirado’s illustrations adorn packaging, clothing, vinyl, walls, web pages and laptop covers. He’s exhibited in galleries across Europe and America, and enjoyed working with musicians, fashion brands and independent producers. Past clients range from Courtney Love to Glamour magazine. “I was delighted to work with Glamour because the project was a lot of fun and there was a lot of creative liberty, which is really important to me,” he explains.
Miss Kee
One of Tirado’s favourite personal projects, in which he emphasises the contrast between organic and metric shapes: “It’s a duality between freedom and wildness, strength and subtlety.”

Olly Hayes
Location: Brighton, UK
Job: Creative director and motion designer
Olly Hayes is the creative director of Brighton-based motion graphics studio, o-motion. After graduating from Bournemouth Arts Institute, he built a wealth of experience working as a motion designer for various companies, before taking the leap and going freelance in 2007. In early 2011 he set up his own studio, and is positive about the future: “I’m hoping o-motion will continue to grow as a business. There’s a big shift towards motion graphics at the moment, so things are looking exciting,” he says.
“I generally start with rough sketches and jump pretty quickly into Photoshop or Illustrator to design specific elements, which I then take into After Effects or Cinema 4D to animate,” says Hayes of his creative process.
“I love that it’s not 9 till 5 and I love that every job is different. I still get a kick out of making things move, and can easily get hung up for hours on perfecting the simplest of movements.”
One Voice
Crush Creative commissioned o-motion to create an inspiring animated film for the Tearfund charity. The task was to encourage people around the world to pray for global poverty.
