Frosti Gnarr
Location: Reykjavik, Iceland
Job: Art director
Having recently graduated from the Hogeschool Voor De Kunst in Utrecht, the Netherlands, Iceland-born Frosti Gnarr is now busy running his own studio – and he has big plans for it: “We have a lot of really exciting projects coming up, including books, CD covers and music videos,” he says. “I hope that soon in the future Frosti Gnarr Studio will have blossomed into the creative powerhouse I want it to become.”
Gnarr includes Maxime Buchi and graphic designer Storm Thorgerson among his influences. His biggest design interests, he adds, include typography and illustration-based graphic design. “I would describe my work as being very typographically led, with a flowing illustration style – my work juxtaposes the hard and soft elements of visual communication,” he explains.
Vorhatid
Gnarr created this poster for a graduate showcase by music students from the Iceland Academy of the Arts. Gnarr is particularly pleased with the efficient grid system in place.

Paul Layzell
Location: New York, USA
Job: Illustrator and animator
Brighton illustration graduate Paul Layzell has a huge passion for creating images and animation. He uses a range of media including ink, pens, markers and spray paint, before moving into Photoshop for colouring and tweaking.
Currently based in New York City, Layzell takes inspiration from the diversity of the urban environment: “I love everything from the graffiti movement of the 70s, to the diverse genres of music it’s produced, the patchwork of different city environments and the huge cross-section of people co-existing,” he says.
Layzell’s favourite work to date is a music video that he created with his brother for British pop band Mazes: “It was a labour of love, and it’s not perfect,” he admits, “but I think the video complements the song. It’s an extension of our mutual love for the VHS skate videos we watched growing up.”
Layzell will shortly be moving to London where he plans to continue working as a freelance illustrator.
Heat
Part of a collection of images and text for a book by Layzell entitled The City, which depicts 70s street culture in New York City. The imagery is heavily influenced by films such as 80 Blocks from Tiffany’s and Style Wars.

City Riso Print
Layzell used a limited colour palette for this piece, but still achieves varied tone and depth throughout. “I wanted to create an image that had a lot going on, but was still bold,” he explains.
Stars Died For You
Marcos Calamato
Location: San Francisco, USA
Job: Graphic designer
Marcos Calamato is a freelance graphic designer, self-confessed ‘type aficionado’ and all-round believer in hard work. He spends his days “thinking about design and wrestling his feline companion.” Originally from Argentina, he now lives in San Francisco Bay.
Calamato began his career as a branding and strategy specialist, before later deciding to concentrate on typography: “I adapt my style with each new project,” he says, “whether it’s a clean and minimal solution for corporate branding, or a more complex and intricate design for type. My style has evolved with my eternal mission of becoming a better designer.”
For lettering work, he begins with pencil sketches and develops them in Illustrator. However, when working on design projects he starts directly in Photoshop and Illustrator.
Calamato says he enjoys the freedom that comes with design: “I love the fact that I can change direction any time I want to. I like the idea of motion, and it’s very satisfying to see my style, inspiration and skills constantly evolving,” he says.
Stars Died For You
This typographical piece was inspired by a series of lectures about the universe, which Calamato describes as “a tribute to science and rational thinking.”

A favourite of Calamato’s, this lettering was created for his future niece. “It isn’t the most detailed or intricate lettering that I’ve done, it has great emotional significance to me.”
Starry-Eyed
Jesse Tise
Location: California, USA
Job: Illustrator
Jesse Tise is a California-based freelance illustrator who relishes the opportunity to apply his unique, graphic visual language to different assignments. When he’s not working, he devotes time to creating self-initiated books and zines, many of which draw on an alien world of flora and fauna.
As well as drawing, painting and printmaking, Tise also creates 3D toy sculptures and animates his own motion pieces. He’s currently working on his first stop-motion piece, which he hopes will help launch his career in the motion industry.
Tise names a collaboration with Californian advertising agency Team One as one of the highlights of his career so far. As for his inspiration: “I’m hugely influenced by the natural word,” he reflects. “The oceans are one of my favourite sources of inspiration.”
Starry-Eyed
A promotional project, based on people’s sense of perception and cognition whilst dreaming. “This is my favourite piece to date,” he explains, “as it’s much more abstract in meaning and surreal in subject matter than my past work.”
