Ian Keltie is a 29-year-old commercial artist based in Newcastle upon Tyne. He studied illustration at the University of Sunderland before heading to London where, among other things, he worked as a magazine designer for the BBC. After three years he returned to the North East but ended up in a job he really didn't enjoy.

"It wasn't long before I realised that starting my own design studio was what I really wanted to do," says Keltie. "So in March 2005 I packed in my job and strolled off into the sunset." Six months on he hasn't looked back. "So far my clients have included Timeout and the New York Times."

IKCA "This is a personal piece, which I use as one of my four business card designs. I didn't want an everyday run of the mill card - some Pantone colour with my address printed on it; for me that's a wasted opportunity. Instead I really wanted to create something that stood out and represented what I actually do."

London Pubs "I did this series of illustrations for Timeout's London Pubs Guide. The brief was nice and simple: illustrate all kinds of bars. As you can imagine I did a fair bit of practical research on this one!"

You "This is a piece of work in progress for the refurbishment of a local restaurant in Newcastle. The brief is to design a series of images that will be printed on canvas and adorn the walls. It's a really exciting project because I'm being given total creative freedom, and the fact that families and friends will be tucking into meals surrounded by my work makes me really happy."

Clowns "This piece was commissioned by Murphy Creative for the cover of a report about the ongoing emergence of reality television. I love old, Victorian fairground graphics and posters, and this was a great opportunity, or rather excuse, to get some of those influences into my work."

Keep Out "This is a personal piece. There's not a day that goes by when I'm not working on a brief or just throwing things together, trying to evolve my style. Some days it works, some days it doesn't. I particularly love this illustration and use it as one of my business card designs."

Unibanco "This is an illustration for the annual report for stock holders and CEOs of the Brazilian bank UNIBANCO. The client gave me a black-and-white picture of the bank building in Sao Paulo city to work with."

Eurostar "This poster illustration was created for British Eurostar. The ad agency asked me to produce a tacky poster of a man in love with the low £59 fare. I based the image of the man on a picture I took of myself posing with my hand on my heart and then added a typically Parisian-looking background."

Coke "I have worked for some major global brands, and they don't come much bigger than Coca-Cola. This is one of a series of layout illustrations I produced for the company's Vibezone 2005 advertising campaign.
