Pippa Cornell is a 22-year-old illustrator who graduated this year from Cambridge School of Art at Anglia Ruskin University with a BA (Hons) degree in Illustration.
"I started out creating my images in a collage style with coloured paper and card, so moving from this to Illustrator felt like the natural progression for me," she says. "I can now create images much faster, and I can play around easily with colour and positioning."
So what inspires Pippa's strong illustration style? "I find watching people and generally being nosey the best way of getting inspiration for my work," she says. "I always try and find time to go out and sketch, as I often use this as a starting point for my illustrations."
Pippa is currently trying to gain exposure for her work: "I have just put my website up on the net and I'm doing a bit of self promotion targeted at all the people I think will be interested in what I do," she says. "I would really like to work in the editorial area of illustration, but I am also working on some children's illustrations right now."
So what of the future? "I would love to see my work move in some way," says Pippa. "I think the images I create would work well as animations. I have been in touch with a media collective called Triggerset, and we are working together trying to make some short animations."
TRIBES: OLD LADY "This image is taken from a book I've made that looks at the different 'tribes' found in the UK. It includes children, chavs, students and the elderly."

Tom O'Malley recently graduated from the University of Portsmouth with a BA (Hons) in Illustration, and now hopes to make illustration his full-time profession. "I recently exhibited my work at the New Designers exhibition in London. It was a fantastic experience and a great chance to meet people in the design world," he says. "I'm now completely addicted to the London lifestyle and would really like to work there."
Tom's striking illustrations are often colourful and figurative, mainly using continuous lines of varying thicknesses. "I'm constantly working in my sketchbook, taking inspiration from my surroundings, magazines and life in general," he says. "My next move is to continue to get my name out there as much as possible, at the same time looking for some sort of representation, commissions or company work, so I can start earning a living from the thing I love doing."
PROMO COVER "This illustration was used to market myself in a promo pack for this year's New Designers exhibition. I felt the illustration gave a good impression of me and my work. This was actually influenced by an advert I saw in Computer Arts!"

SOFTWARE Illustrator & Photoshop
Based in the north of England, 20- year-old Alex Phillips-Broadhurst has just started out in the world of illustration, but already he has developed a signature style.
So how does he go about creating these often-comical images? "Like most designers, I'll first develop an idea in my sketchbook, before transferring those ideas on to whiteboard if the piece is large format," he says. "I then scan or photograph the image and move to Illustrator, where I work up the shapes before moving to Photoshop where I add texture and colour."
Like many illustrators, Alex takes inspiration from the places and people he sees. "My ideas for my personal work come from my wanderings around Leeds (I wander a lot) and jokes I hear over a pint down the pub," he admits. "It's a sort of naïve social commentary with a bit of humour thrown in for good measure. Oh, and there's freaky monsters, too."
ICE CREAM MONSTER "I like drawing monsters and ice cream vans, so naturally I drew a monster in an ice cream van. This image has been adapted and is currently being printed on to a limited-edition T-shirt."

SOFTWARE Creative Suite 2
At just 18 years old, Mikael Markai is one of the youngest-ever Exposure entrants. Although still studying at NTI Gymnasiet in Gothenburg, Sweden, he has found time to build a portfolio of work.
"I have many interests, and one of them is to create all kinds of graphic works," he says. "I'm currently in my final year at college, and graphics is my speciality."
Having gained a scholarship last year to study graphic communication, Mikael has set about teaching himself how to make the most of Adobe's Creative Suite. "I get my inspiration from everywhere," he admits, "but most of it comes simply from looking at the work of other designers. I have a very abstract style, and that is what I like most."
WATER "This is the first image in a series of four Elemental illustrations created in Illustrator, which depict water, fire, earth and air. I was inspired to create this series by the work of CrisVector on the DeviantArt website."

Twenty-three-year-old Helgi Páll Einarsson is currently studying for a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design at the Icelandic Academy of Arts, Reykjavik. In his spare time, he also runs the recently established Wonder Association with his design partner Benjamin Mermaid.
"My influences are fairly widespread, and make a list that doesn't really make any sense now that I think about it," he says. "But off the top of my head, they include Syrup Helsinki, Andrew Rae, Geoff McFetridge, Richard May, Kozyndan, Jon Burgerman, Neasden Control Centre, Paul Willoughby, Daniel Eatock, Ghostshrimp, Graham Romieu and probably loads of other obvious people that I'm completely forgetting!"
Helgi is unsure of his plans for the future, but he does have a clear idea of what he'd like his work to involve: "Nice people, oatmeal, coffee, long walks and a brightly-lit studio in a cheap part of Berlin, Paris or Istanbul," he reveals.
PLAYING INSIDE "Playing too much inside turned me into a pasty-looking teenager, so, also as part of a school project, I decided to illustrate this."
