Sixteen-year-old Nick Delaney is a self-taught designer. "My school had very few graphic design programs, and there weren't many classes I could take, so my design career has taken several directions," he says. Delaney is currently working in broadcast design: "It's tough and challenging, but I hope to succeed in it," he says. "I love working in any area of art - from traditional to digital."

Art is a display of thought "The goal here was to create depth. I wanted to show emotion with the eyes."

High and Fly "This image is all about colour. I used Illustrator and Photoshop to add depth."

Life is a pair of shoes "This was a silly image I created for Depthcore Human (www.depthcore.com) using cell rendering in Cinema 4D."

Dreamer "I think this is one of my best images. I aimed to create colours and emotion using Illustrator and Photoshop to give it a construction paper effect."

Conjoined "The idea for this image came from a TV show about conjoined children. I wanted to show emotion through their eyes."

Rollin' the future "I started this image with a Cinema 4D render and then used 2D shapes to add perspective."

Run On "The figure in this image is created in Illustrator, with the sky and wheat elements drawn in Photoshop using a tablet. My intention with this piece was to create the look of a traditional water colour, motion blur was used on the wheat to add movement."

Solstice "For this image I wanted to convey a strong emotional sensation using soft gradients. A negative space was employed to create a sense of intimacy."

Elijah "This image was constructed entirely in Illustrator using layers made up of shapes and gradients. I kept the background simple in order to draw attention to the detail on the figure and to enhance the sense of isolation."

Leon and the Place Between "This image was created for a children's book in development with Templar Publishing for Angela McAllister's wonderful story. The story is so rich in imagery it practically creates itself!"

Mighty Rearranger "When creating illustrations in Photoshop I try to keep an "organic" feel. The "stage" was made from an old bird box, the figures from pieces of wood and the faces from Fimo."

Trojan Horse "Here I used parts of Greek boats as a starting point and then composited images in Photoshop. The best software you'll ever own is your imagination."

Animal Conversation "I collect natural images and make clipping paths every day. I have a huge collection of all sorts of elements ready to put in my " Photoshop blender" where I shift layers, tweak colours and create nice compositions. This image came naturally while I was making a collage for Reload magazine to place near an interview with me."

DZone "I created this illustration for D-zone magazine. There was no specific theme so I just designed and combined elements I liked. The astronauts are surrounded by random graphic elements I collected over time."

Biostrukture "This image is one of my personal favourites. I found these old floral scans on the internet and blended them with some overlays in Photoshop to create a dark underwater sphere. I then attached these nice glows as if it's a path or something."

Paris Fashion "I came into illustration through a burning desire to get back to pictures, be self-employed and earn some money being creative and doing my own thing. Illustration fulfilled all three needs. This image was created in Photoshop for an exhibition I held at the Tardis in Clerkenwell called Domestic Science. The image was hung on fishing wire in the window of the exhibition space for passers-by to see."
