Exit Through The Gift Shop
Computer Arts - Jim - 22 Jan 2010 4:55pm

Describing itself as "The world's first street art disaster movie", Banksy's new film has appeared out of nowhere in typical Banksy style and will be having its world premiere at the Sundance festival on Sunday. If you can't get there (and we're guessing it's completely sold out anyway) you can at least enjoy the trailer.

From The Dark Past
Computer Arts - Jim - 20 Jan 2010 4:15pm

This lovely bit of Flash has been sitting in my bookmarks for a while, waiting to be unleashed. Designed by Rafael Rozendaal and coded by Reinier Feijen, it displays a rolling polygonal landscape, accompanied by strange clanging noises. Click on it and you can add a bit of mouse-driven dynamic lighting. Completely useless, but it's nice to have around.

CA170 Webcam Light Painting Tutorial
Computer Arts - Jim - 10 Dec 2009 4:49pm

The latest Computer Arts should be hitting subscribers' doormats around now, and in it there's a great Flash tutorial from Matt Booth on using your webcam to paint with light. Unfortunately there's a mistake in the support files that prevents you from saving your images, and by the time Matt spotted it the CD was already on the way to the duplicators. Fortunately it's an easy fix; just download this zip file and use it instead of the file on the CD.

Timelines
Computer Arts - Jim - 27 Aug 2009 12:04pm

My old chum David McCandless has a new site called Information Is Beautiful, where he creates and collects lovely visualizations from all manner of interesting datasets. His latest creation is a bonkers temporal map of time travel plots from movies and TV, which not only looks great but also highlights areas where timelines cross and, for example, Marty McFly and the Star Trek crew might get together to battle the Terminator.

Seb Lester
Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Aug 2009 11:43am

It's funny how things sometimes pan out; I happened upon Seb Lester's illustration and, liking what I saw, vaguely wondered if we'd ever covered him before. It wasn't until I looked at the typography section of his site that I realised that he's the chap behind the Soho Gothic font and he'd written a tutorial about its creation for CA Projects. Interesting to see another side to him, though.

"SUGOI!"
Computer Arts - Jim - 20 Jul 2009 4:37pm

Tado made a picture for Virgin about things to do in Japan, and they liked it so much that they decided to remix it, adding lots of extra details and their own fond memories of Japan, until they ended up with something that they could turn into an enormous A1 poster that, funnily enough, is now available to buy. Yours for £14.99 (of which £5 goes to the Western Park Hospital Cancer Charity in Sheffield), and they'll even throw in a free Ramen Monster sticker as well. Bargain! Find it here.
Beck's Music Inspired Art
Computer Arts - Jim - 20 Jul 2009 4:10pm

For their latest campaign Beck's - the beer people - have commissioned ten artists to re-imagine the covers from some of the most influential albums of the last four decades, and the resulting work is now available to view. We're especially enamoured of Rex Crowle's remake of The Beatles' Let It Be, while Modern Toss's version of U2's The Joshua Tree had us giggling like schoolgirls. Beck's still have 90 classic album covers that need reinterpreting - sign up and claim one as your own if you fancy a go.

Civilization
Computer Arts - Jim - 29 Jun 2009 3:42pm

The Standard hotel in New York commissioned Marco Brambilla to create a video installation to be used in its elevators, and in association with Crush he came up with an amazing vertical tableau depicting Heaven, Hell and all the bits of purgatory in between. You start at the ground floor with Hell laid out before you, with Heaven awaiting when you reach the top floor. It's one impressive piece of motion work; make sure you read the notes underneath the video to see how much work was involved.

Surprise of the day is that Bristol City Museum And Art Gallery is hosting a new exhibition by Banksy, opening tomorrow, 13 June. Featuring 100 works that Banksy describes as his vision of the future, it's been organised in complete secrecy, so much so that even Banksy's site is only showing a single teaser image, promising details to follow. Correction
Computer Arts - Tom - 04 Jun 2009 10:15am

In issue 163, on sale in the UK now, we mistakenly attributed a comment to Brendan Dawes at magneticNorth stating that the Eames design team were brothers. They were, of course, husband and wife. First of all we should recognise Ray Eames’ all-embracing contribution to design and the lack of recognition bestowed upon her. We should also point out that it was in fact our mistake and not Brendan’s, as was the assumption that magneticNorth produce television commercials; they don’t. Ray Eames was an abiding example of broad-brush design, and should rightly be celebrated as a true innovator within an industry that was – and some would argue, remains – male dominated. Should she still be working today, I would certainly hope her contribution to design would be more widely acknowledged, and not just for the fact she was female. Our sincerest apologies.

MouthOff
Computer Arts - Jim - 28 May 2009 12:39pm

If you're bored of your mouth and have an iPhone, here's the perfect app for you. MouthOff displays a big sound-reactive animated mouth on your iPhone, so that you can hold it in front of your face while you talk. Even better, the developers roped in a collection of top illustrators to provide the mouth, including Pete Fowler, Army of Trolls and, you'll be amazed to learn, Jon Burgerman. And it's only 59p - that value for money even if the novelty wears off after five minutes.

Andy Gilmore
Computer Arts - Jim - 27 May 2009 4:53pm

I just happened upon a very nice illustration from Wired by Andy Gilmore, which I liked so much that I had to see more of his work. And it was well worth finding; much of it is psychedelic vector work that looks like it's been generated procedurally and then finished off in Photoshop. There's also quite a bit of hand-drawn work in a similar style as well; it makes for a good mix.

ColoRotate
Computer Arts - Jim - 15 May 2009 12:59pm

"Colors (sic) come to life in 3D!" It's been a while since I've come across a new colour wheel palette making thing; this one is in 3D, with the colour wheel extruded into diamond form in order to do away with confusing sliders. I'm still a bit confused by it, but give it a go and see what you think.

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
