ALT/1977
Computer Arts - Jim - 21 Jun 2010 12:11pm

Alex Varanese has put a lot of thought into the basically splendid notion of time travelling back to 1977 with an MP3 player, a laptop, a mobile phone and a handheld games console, and then redesigning and marketing them in true 1977 style. I definitely want a LapTron 64. Actually, I want all of them.

Modern British Posters
Computer Arts - Amy - 08 Jun 2010 5:10pm

Retro graphic design buffs have a new tome to weigh down their library wish-list: Paul Rennie’s ‘Modern British Posters: Art, Design & Communication’ (Black Dog Publishing Ltd). Focussing particularly on three classic eras of British poster design – the mid-1910s, around the outbreak of World War II and the self-publishing explosion that was the 1970s – Rennie plots a graphic course through the past century, via creative, sociological and political waves. A must-read for advertising and graphic design fans everywhere.

Free Range takes flight
Computer Arts - Amy - 04 Jun 2010 9:56am

The 10th annual Free Range design show throws open its doors today, offering a platform for up-and-coming design graduates to showcase their work to the public and creative industry alike. This year's show runs from 4 June to 26 July at the Old Truman Brewery, the east-end of London's creative hub, which has played host to thousands of design graduates since the show's inception. Free Range presents the work of graduates from art and design universities around the UK, across several categories spanning art, graphics and design, photography, architecture, product and furniture design, and textiles. The 2010 show also includes a new fashion exhibition and showcase space from educational charity D&AD, which is bringing New Blood, its creative talent show, to Free Range for the first time. "Free Range provides new graduates with their first real opportunity to engage with the general public, future client base and potential employers, as well as making connections with each other, sparking relationships that can take them on new creative journeys," says Free Range founder and director Tamsin O'Hanlon. "We're still in touch with many who came through Free Range and are now well-established in their chosen fields." The calendar of Free Range exhibitors and events is online here.

The New Blood has arrived
Computer Arts - Amy - 01 Jun 2010 4:35pm

Keep your eyes peeled for D&AD's tongue-in-cheek New Blood 2010 campaign, which makes a departure from last year's onus on highlighting the design industry icons due to be in attendance, instead depicting them in various pre-suicidal poses above the line 'Sorry old blood, the new blood has arrived'. Designed by NB: Studio and shot by David Stewart, the campaign features the likes of Laura Jordan Bambach standing at the edge of a swimming pool with a Mac strapped to her ankle, and illustrator Paul Davis with a pencil perched precariously at the entrance to his left nostril. D&AD's New Blood exhibition takes place at the Old Truman Brewery, London and is open to the public from Friday 25 June to Monday 28 June.

One Way or Another
Computer Arts - Amy - 25 May 2010 10:02am

Skate culture-inspired art is nothing new. For decades, urban streets across the world have been reclaimed by skateboarding bodies and the artwork of the subculture that they're home to. In the coming weeks, though, this culture comes in from the cold with 'One Way or Another', a series of one-day Stateside exhibitions of the work of skateboarding artists. Names including Greg Pnut Galinsky (Vans), Andrew Pommier (Momentum Wheels, RVCA) and Michael Leon (Commonwealth Stacks) will be contributing work to the exhibitions, which will take place at LA's Heavyweight Gallery (29 May), Escapist in Kansas City, MO (04 June) and the Austin, TX No Comply Skate Shop (07 June).

Infographic goals
Computer Arts - Tom - 24 May 2010 12:08pm

The CA team are all suckers for a lovely bit of infographic work, and this excellent interpretation of classic World Cup final goals from Adrian Neville is just such an example. Obviously, being English, the 1966 one is our favourite. And yes, the ball definitely crossed the line.

Adobe releases HTML 5 update for Dreamweaver
Computer Arts - Tom - 21 May 2010 2:29pm

Adobe has released an update for Dreamweaver CS5 that enables designers to see and manage HTML 5 code without the software getting confused by the new syntax. What's more, the update includes a new version of the WebKit browser for live previewing of web projects, making it ideal for coding iPad and iPhone applications. We're pretty sure this is in direct response to Steve Jobs' recent rant on Flash, with Adobe's chief technology officer Kevin Lynch saying "We're going to try and make the best tools in the world for HTML 5." It seems Adobe's plan B for getting Creative Suite content on to Apple's platforms is a shrewd one. The update's available to Dreamweaver CS5 users at the link below.
