Civilization
Computer Arts - Jim - 29 Jun 2009 3:42pm

The Standard hotel in New York commissioned Marco Brambilla to create a video installation to be used in its elevators, and in association with Crush he came up with an amazing vertical tableau depicting Heaven, Hell and all the bits of purgatory in between. You start at the ground floor with Hell laid out before you, with Heaven awaiting when you reach the top floor. It's one impressive piece of motion work; make sure you read the notes underneath the video to see how much work was involved.

Surprise of the day is that Bristol City Museum And Art Gallery is hosting a new exhibition by Banksy, opening tomorrow, 13 June. BBC News, however, has the inside scoop; head on over for a taste of what's on show. See you there!

Correction
Computer Arts - Tom - 04 Jun 2009 10:15am

In issue 163, on sale in the UK now, we mistakenly attributed a comment to Brendan Dawes at magneticNorth stating that the Eames design team were brothers. They were, of course, husband and wife. First of all we should recognise Ray Eames’ all-embracing contribution to design and the lack of recognition bestowed upon her. We should also point out that it was in fact our mistake and not Brendan’s, as was the assumption that magneticNorth produce television commercials; they don’t. Ray Eames was an abiding example of broad-brush design, and should rightly be celebrated as a true innovator within an industry that was – and some would argue, remains – male dominated. Should she still be working today, I would certainly hope her contribution to design would be more widely acknowledged, and not just for the fact she was female. Our sincerest apologies.

MouthOff
Computer Arts - Jim - 28 May 2009 12:39pm

If you're bored of your mouth and have an iPhone, here's the perfect app for you. MouthOff displays a big sound-reactive animated mouth on your iPhone, so that you can hold it in front of your face while you talk. Even better, the developers roped in a collection of top illustrators to provide the mouth, including Pete Fowler, Army of Trolls and, you'll be amazed to learn, Jon Burgerman. And it's only 59p - that value for money even if the novelty wears off after five minutes.

Andy Gilmore
Computer Arts - Jim - 27 May 2009 4:53pm

I just happened upon a very nice illustration from Wired by Andy Gilmore, which I liked so much that I had to see more of his work. And it was well worth finding; much of it is psychedelic vector work that looks like it's been generated procedurally and then finished off in Photoshop. There's also quite a bit of hand-drawn work in a similar style as well; it makes for a good mix.

ColoRotate
Computer Arts - Jim - 15 May 2009 12:59pm

"Colors (sic) come to life in 3D!" It's been a while since I've come across a new colour wheel palette making thing; this one is in 3D, with the colour wheel extruded into diamond form in order to do away with confusing sliders. I'm still a bit confused by it, but give it a go and see what you think.

Please Say Something Revisited
Computer Arts - Jim - 06 May 2009 4:21pm

It's over a year since I mentioned David O'Reilly's Please Say Something. Back then it was five high-speed episodes of love and loss in the distant future, messing brilliantly with the old-school cat & mouse cartoon cliché, and making for a compelling and deeply troubling way to pass a few minutes. Now it's completed and contains 23 episodes of exactly 25 seconds each, adding up (with titles) to precisely ten minutes of breathtaking cartoon turbodrama. Watch it now, or catch it on 12 May at Bafta, as the headline act in Future Shorts' Please Say Something short film festival.

Windows 7 Gets Illustrated
Computer Arts - Jim - 05 May 2009 5:15pm

Whatever you may think of Microsoft, it's quite a relief that they appear to be getting Windows 7 right. And here's a small indicator of how right they want to get it - they hired the 72 and Sunny agency to search the world (and possibly some back issues of Computer Arts) for illustrators to create some of its desktop wallpaper. You can see the results here - pretty good going, I reckon.
Yasuda Takahiro
Computer Arts - Jim - 01 May 2009 4:32pm

There isn't an enormous amount of work on Yasuda Takahiro's site, but I like his style and I like the presentation - swishy but minimalistic with his artwork taking centre stage. I'd tell you more about him but most of the site's in Japanese.

Visual Crooks site goes live
Computer Arts - Amy - 20 Mar 2009 2:31pm

The website of the digital media students of Sweden’s renowned Hyper Islands school has just gone live, and it’s definitely worth checking out to get a heads-up on the level of talent emerging from this year’s graduate pool. Working under the moniker Digital Crooks, the 43-strong class put the site together in their spare time, overseeing every element of the project from concept and design to hunting down sponsors. Combining Flash, 3D work, video footage and 2D designs, the interactive site layout depicts a prison, housing students of different specialisms in separate wings that the visitor can explore, with each individual student having designed their own character and cell. For more news on the world’s hottest graduating digital design talent, keep your eye on Computer Arts’ Graduate Showcase updates on this website and in each issue of the magazine.

Google Banksy View
Computer Arts - Jim - 19 Mar 2009 4:54pm

Google Maps' StreetView for the UK went live today, as you're doubtless already well aware. We're struggling to understand why they failed to include Bath but felt it necessary to include Scunthorpe. Anyway, a group of Banksy admirers have taken it upon themselves to track down his work on StreetView, and so far they've done very well. This, contrary to any similar assertion I may have made in the past, is what the internet was made for. Link.
Chrome Experiments
Computer Arts - Jim - 19 Mar 2009 3:45pm

It's amazing what you can do with just a web browser and JavaScript these days. This site, created by the Google Chrome team, showcases experiments that prove you don't need Flash to do impressive things on the web. Naturally it prefers you to be using Chrome with its V8 JavaScript engine, but we've had success trying it with the latest Safari.

Wacom Nextbeat
Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Mar 2009 2:06pm

A little off-topic for Computer Arts? I think not, seeing as (a) it's Wacom, and (b) there's probably a healthy proportion of you that likes to do a bit of DJing, one way or another. So, here's Wacom's upcoming DJ device, the nextbeat, that I've just received an email about. I'm reasonably certain that I want one.

What, No Comic Sans?
Computer Arts - Jim - 11 Mar 2009 12:34pm

Kenjiro Harigai
Computer Arts - Jim - 10 Mar 2009 4:32pm

Kenjiro's portfolio is wide and impressive, but I especially love how it's presented. Everything slides past, as if crammed onto a darkened conveyor belt, and individual pieces expand and brighten as you hover the mouse pointer over them. It has other tricks as well; have a play with it and see.

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
