Papervision3D Computer Arts - Jim - 20 Feb 2007 3:05pm This 3D engine for Flash 8 and 9 has really come along since I first set eyes on it a few months ago. Check out the demos, and take a look at the blog to see it handling bump mapping. http://osflash.org/papervision3d
Rafaël Rozendaal Computer Arts - Jim - 20 Feb 2007 2:47pm A mixed bag of Flash experiments here for your perusal. I particularly like Vai Avanti - its colour scheme's a little hard on the eyes, but the endless rolling landscape made up of bands of solid colour is rather pleasant. http://www.newrafael.com/
Graduate Showcase 2007: call for entries Get your work seen by over 20,000 design professionals
Yahoo! Pipes Computer Arts - Jim - 19 Feb 2007 11:24am "Rewire the Web," it says. Yahoo's new Pipes system enables you to manipulate and aggregate to your heart's content in order to create feeds to your own specifications. It should also send a chill through everyone who remembers the BBC's classic Ghostwatch. http://pipes.yahoo.com/
Neighbours Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Feb 2007 12:35pm Seeing as it's Friday, here's some more time-wasting fun from the very lovely Eyezmaze, creator of the especially excellent Grow games. It's a nice, simple concept - arrange the nine little creatures so that they all live happily together. Have fun!
Zookeeper Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Feb 2007 12:11pm Oh, great. This already accounts for far too much of my time at home on the Nintendo DS, and now there's a new Flash version that behaves more like the DS version. Just swap the animals around to make rows of three. Hope you didn't have anything important planned for today. http://www.kiteretsu.jp/games/zka/zka.htm
Rice And Beanz Computer Arts - Jim - 15 Feb 2007 2:44pm There's some really nice stuff starting to show up in the comments bit of our MySpace page. I'm rather taken with the work of NYC-based Derek Santiago, who describes his style as "urban latin", fusing futuristic stylings with traditional latin subject matter and retro pin-ups. http://www.riceandbeanz.net/
The Museum of Lost Interactions Computer Arts - Jim - 15 Feb 2007 11:45am Ever heard of the Acoustograph, the 1920s ancestor of iTunes? Of course you haven't. Find out all about it, plus other unlikely predecessors of modern technology, in this brilliant project from Interactive Media Design students at the University of Dundee. http://www.idl.dundee.ac.uk/moli/
Neon Bible Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Feb 2007 2:30pm One of those "What the devil is this all about, then?" sites for your delectation. It turns out it's all about a new album from The Arcade Fire. All rather baffling - I suppose I'll end up buying the album, now. http://www.neonbible.com/
New BBC2 Idents Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Feb 2007 12:51pm Digital Spy has a first look at the shiny new set of BBC2 idents, designed by Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO and produced, you'll be amazed to learn, by Red Bee Media. Take a look before they hit the airwaves on Sunday.
The Artists's Survival Kit Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Feb 2007 12:25pm Keri Smith has come up with just the thing for when you're having a really bad creative day. Print it out, cut each page into four sections and then keep them all for those times when you feel like you may as well uninstall Photoshop and go work in a bank. http://www.kerismith.com/ask.html
Couscous Kid Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Feb 2007 12:19pm Mathew Star Thomas lives practically on our doorstep - or at least, in Bath - and appears to be another artist who's so far escaped my attention. Of course, it could just be a catastrophic memory failure on my part. Warning - contains nudery. http://www.couscouskid.co.uk/
Hannah Stouffer Computer Arts - Jim - 12 Feb 2007 4:16pm I can't remember blogging Hannah's work before, so consequently I'm a little annoyed at myself for not having already spotted it. Still, I'm delighted to correct the oversight. Sorted. Respect due. http://www.grandarray.com/
BastardGraphics Computer Arts - Jim - 12 Feb 2007 11:38am MySpace comes up trumps again - Julien Rivoire brought himself to my attention, I took a look at his work and liked it, and now here I am directing you to his site. That's how it works these days. http://www.bastardgraphics.com/
Polarity Computer Arts - Jim - 09 Feb 2007 4:57pm Fancy a bit of chilled Friday fun before you pack up for the weekend, then? Too bad, because Polarity's rather difficult. If you're familiar with Ikaruga then you'll probably feel at home. And if you're not, it'll probably make you swear lots. While appreciating the splendid graphics. http://www.candystand.com/play.do?id=17986
Yarr! Pirates! Computer Arts - Jim - 09 Feb 2007 4:47pm Computer Arts regular Rex Crowle's site's always worth a look, especially right now that it features the pirate animation that he tells you how to make in the current issue. http://www.rexbox.co.uk/
Superficiel Computer Arts - Jim - 09 Feb 2007 4:27pm I'm having one of those dry patches where my usual sources are turning up a combination of stuff I've seen before, stuff that I don't much care for and not a lot else. It's rather annoying. Luckily I had this put to one side for such a rainy day - a nice collection of eclectic interactive toys. And I'll see if I can't find some proper Friday afternoon entertainment before the day's out. http://www.superficiel.org/
Visual Acoustics Computer Arts - Jim - 08 Feb 2007 2:55pm Another audio-visual toy for you - move the mouse around the screen to play up to eight instruments with accomanying graphical flourishes. Sadly neither the graphics nor the sound are really up to much, but it's fun for a while. http://www.ampledesign.co.uk/va/
Rosemarie Fiore Computer Arts - Jim - 08 Feb 2007 2:44pm There's plenty to see at Rosemarie's site, from traditional oil painting to action paintings created with the rear windscreen wiper of a Subaru and with a pinball table. But my favourite exhibits, unsurprisingly, are the time-lapse photographs of 80s arcade games. http://www.rosemariefiore.com/
Fancy Winning Something? Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Feb 2007 4:33pm If you haven't popped into the competitions page lately, there's plenty of great stuff up for grabs. I've just spent a delightful hour cajoling the machine elves into letting me put up MacFormat's new competition - if you'd like a Mac mini and a copy of Toast 8 Titanium, you'll probably want to take a look. http://www.computerarts.co.uk/competitions
CrisVector Computer Arts - Jim - 06 Feb 2007 4:15pm I was going to post this last Wednesday, but the site wasn't being my friend. Or anyone's, for that matter. Luckily I still had Cristiano Siqueira's site bookmarked; if you like vectors then you'll find plenty here to impress you. http://www.crisvector.com/
Alex Rinker Computer Arts - Jim - 06 Feb 2007 12:56pm It's been a funny few days. While our tech team have been using their special hammers to sort out the site's performance (should all be much faster now, fingers crossed) I've had some time off and my first trip to London in something like three years. Amazing. And now here's Alex Rinker, another MySpace chum with plenty of great work under his belt. Becoming our MySpace friends and commenting us is an excellent way of grabbing our attention, you know. http://www.arinkerdesign.com/
Painter X Computer Arts - Jim - 06 Feb 2007 11:41am Corel has announced Painter X, and not only do our unicornophile pals over at ImagineFX have all the details, they're also going full-on Painter X crazy in their next issue, out on 13 February, featuring a free 44-page Painter X book with Painter workshops, galleries and tips from the world's best artists, along with an exclusive 30-day trial of the software. Link.
Self-Assessment Deadline Day Computer Arts - Jim - 31 Jan 2007 11:01am Don't forget - it's every UK freelancer's favourite day today. If you haven't already done so, you have until midnight to file your self-assessment tax return and make your payment or get hit with a £100 fine and interest on what you owe. Obviously I'm sure you already have it all sorted out, but a little reminder won't hurt. http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/
Die 100 Besten Schriften Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Jan 2007 3:49pm Or, if your German's not quite up to snuff, 100 Best Fonts. A nice big clickable list from fontshop.de; even if the text is all Greek to you, there's some decent imagery in there. http://www.100besteschriften.de/
Minuscule Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Jan 2007 12:20pm I never realised that insects led such exciting lives. Thomas Szabo and Hélène Giraud's great little animated short evokes memories of classic movie chase scenes, only with flies and a ladybird, and a spider taking the place of the two men carrying a giant pane of glass across the road. http://minuscule.tv/
Transmediale 07 Computer Arts - Jim - 29 Jan 2007 4:55pm The twentieth Transmediale festival for art and digital culture kicks off in Berlin tomorrow with the theme 'unfinish!'. Head on over to the festival site for more details and for a look at another great Transmediale trailer. http://www.transmediale.de/site/
That's Macwang! Computer Arts - Jim - 29 Jan 2007 12:12pm Apple's back yet again with its hilarious (or insufferably smug - take your pick) Get A Mac ads, this time in a UK-centric flavour and starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb. Which leaves me in a bit of a love/hate quandary, really. http://www.apple.com/uk/getamac/ads/
Billie Jean Jim McCauley - 26 Jan 2007 3:37pm We've just had copies of issue 94 of Computer Arts Projects in - The Handmade Issue - and in an increasingly rare occurrence, I've learned a new word: debossing. It's all to do with the excellent hand-drawn cover artwork by Billie Jean; be sure to check out his other work. http://www.billiejean.co.uk/
Johnson Banks Computer Arts - Jim - 26 Jan 2007 12:54pm Acknowledging that design company sites are often a bit like pulling teeth, Johnson Banks have gone out of their way to make theirs less painful, and it works really well. http://www.johnsonbanks.co.uk/jbsite.php
Everything Everything Computer Arts - Jim - 25 Jan 2007 2:53pm Universal Everything fans rejoice - Matt Pyke from UE is appearing live at the London Apple Store on Tuesday 30 January from 7pm, to talk about what UE do, what they love and to give a first glimpse at UE's new HD DVD, Advanced Beauty. http://www.universaleverything.com
Amy Sol Computer Arts - Jim - 24 Jan 2007 3:16pm Amy's artwork is reminiscent of Audrey Kawasaki's, both in style and execution, and consequently it's well worth your attention. http://amysol.com/
Is He Kicking In A Nonce? Computer Arts - Jim - 24 Jan 2007 10:50am Red Bee's campaign for the second series of Life On Mars, the BBC's time-travelling cop show, kicks off on Saturday. I've been chuckling at this Camberwick Green-style teaser all week. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyLjxDlNawU
Hearts Computer Arts - Jim - 23 Jan 2007 5:20pm We've only just got Christmas out of the way, and now Valentine's Day is fast approaching (and don't get me started on Easter). Don't get caught out at the last minute - say it with Kapitza's new Hearts font, containing 70 heart illustrations and repeat patterns. Perfect for designing your own cards and a bargain at £29. http://kapitza.com/shop/fonts/hearts
Normal Room Computer Arts - Jim - 23 Jan 2007 4:56pm What may be normal to you may be utterly bizarre to everyone else. At least, that's what I've found. And in this spirit, here's a project whereby people submit photos of rooms in their houses for everyone else to look at. http://www.normalroom.com/
See For Yourself Computer Arts - Jim - 23 Jan 2007 11:53am A great page here from Dale Purves, demonstrating all those little tricks of contrast and lighting that can make one colour look like something completely different. http://www.purveslab.net/seeforyourself/
Gori De Palma Computer Arts - Jim - 22 Jan 2007 4:46pm It takes a site like this to help me realise that my monitor's in need of a jolly good dusting. http://www.goridepalma.com/
The Ad Generator Computer Arts - Jim - 22 Jan 2007 3:03pm This piece of generative artwork by Alexis Lloyd remixes and randomises words and semantic structures from real corporate slogans and pairs the results with related images from Flickr. Who needs ad agencies? http://www.theadgenerator.org/

Can't Touch This Computer Arts - Jim - 18 Jan 2007 12:17pm If you saw Jeff Han's amazing multi-touch display technology last year - or even if you somehow managed to miss it - here's a special treat. A nice big article all about it, plus a great new video of the latest version in action. Link.
Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!
Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.
Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com
Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
