eBoy - Foobar
Computer Arts - Jim - 01 Dec 2006 12:21pm

Hurrah! It's a new eBoy poster! And instead of focusing on an actual city, this time they've used their pixel powers to create a city based on popular web destinations.

Happy Holidays
Computer Arts - Jim - 01 Dec 2006 11:27am

I happened upon this yesterday but no way was I going to post it while it was still November. Now it's December it's slightly more acceptable, and while I'd rather sit on it a bit longer, it'll probably be in today's b3ta newsletter and then everyone will know about it. So here you go. Billy Idol. Christmas songs. Yikes.

Cut & Paint
Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Nov 2006 3:52pm

If you're up for a bit of the old urban art, as mentioned just down there, but don't know where to start, here's a nice selection of ready-made stencils for you. Try not to get caught.

Bad Note
Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Nov 2006 3:41pm

"Not SPAM", I'm assured in the subject line of this email. Well that's all right then. Cable Street are putting together a show on 12 December, at the Dragon Bar in Shoreditch, featuring all their favourite artists. Sponsored by Tiger Beer, as well, and there's going to be a raffle.

The Truth Is Out There
Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Nov 2006 3:09pm

Just in case you were still wondering which browser to use, it seems that kindly aliens have dropped in to give you a hint via the time-honoured tradition of crop circles. Why not just hold a press conference?
(Slight Return)
Computer Arts - Jim - 28 Nov 2006 12:54pm

That's me done for today, I think. Two new tutorials for your amusement and edification, and if you look in the Reviews bit you'll find that Canon's iPF5000 printer gets a good going-over. Hopefully I'll be back tomorrow, bright and breezy and less diseased.
I Live!
Computer Arts - Jim - 28 Nov 2006 9:57am

Well, kind of. If you've noticed that the site's been a bit quiet since Thursday, it's because I've been at home with one of these excellent colds that are going round, and no-one else knows what buttons to press to make the site go. Stalwart that I am, though, I've dosed up on painkillers and dragged myself in to get some new content up. Shouldn't be long.
Missing Link
Computer Arts - Jim - 22 Nov 2006 3:58pm

A lovely bit of fun (or 'happy digital toy' - my new favourite phrase) here from Japanese web designer Masayuki Kido. All pleasantly self-explanatory and a great way of bringing my blood pressure down as I try and get the new gallery set up for tomorrow.

Musicovery
Computer Arts - Jim - 22 Nov 2006 12:00pm

Interesting idea - click a spot on a 2D matrix between energetic and calm, dark and positive, and Musicovery plays you tunes to suit your mood. It could do with more music on there, but it already throws some great choices at you. I've been waiting for this sort of thing for ages.

Sean Macfarlane
Computer Arts - Jim - 21 Nov 2006 3:47pm

Ha! This new MySpace malarkey is turning into a great way of finding people to mention here. For example, Tokyo-based Sean Macfarlane, who has some fantastically surreal photomontage work under his belt. Keep the friend requests coming in.

Artnatomy
Computer Arts - Jim - 21 Nov 2006 3:08pm

If you want to draw faces and get them right, here's a useful tool that shows you how all those fiddly muscles work and how they translate into different facial expressions.

Thx For The Add :)
Computer Arts - Jim - 20 Nov 2006 2:43pm

The new issue of Computer Arts (out on Thursday, but subs copies already seem to be finding their way through the nation's letter boxes) features a tutorial on making a MySpace page that doesn't look horrid, and to celebrate we've finally jumped on the MySpace bandwagon, with ace tutorialist Sam Gilbey making our page look nice. Come and friend us up so we can feel popular.

ImagineFX Tutorial
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 Nov 2006 3:37pm

Our unicorn-loving chums over at ImagineFX have just uploaded a digital art workshop from conceptart.org co-founder, Andrew Jones, and they think it'll be of interest to Computer Arts readers. "It's quite designery," says Chief Unicorn, Rob Carney. See what you think.
Kuler
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 Nov 2006 12:47pm

Another of those online colour theme creation thingies, only this one's from Adobe and seems to be made with CS2 in mind, enabling you to download themes to use in CS2 applications.

Animator Vs. Animation II
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 Nov 2006 12:28pm

Sequels to hilarious online animations never really work out, do they? Just as none of Weebl's Magical Trevor sequels came close to the brilliance of the original, Animator Vs. Animation II is accomplished and fun, but lacking the spark of the first one. Still a good way to kill five minutes, though.

Join Us!

In case you missed it the first time around, we're still searching for a graphic designer to join the Computer Arts team. If you're passionate about design and want to be part of the world's best selling creative magazine, find out more right here.
Section Seven
Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Nov 2006 11:58am

This Seattle agency has lots of great work on show, and it's all wrapped up in some of the most impressive Flash work I've seen in ages. Make sure you maximise your browser for the full effect - this is one site where I almost wish it took the liberty of maximising it for me.

Ow! My Brain!
Computer Arts - Jim - 15 Nov 2006 4:58pm

I've spent most of the day wrestling with a recalcitrant content management system, the result of which is a whole new competition on the Competitions page. Go me. And then I find this thing. Just what my fried synapses need at this time of day.
Photosynth
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Nov 2006 12:14pm

There's a technology preview up and running of Microsoft Live Labs' new photo viewing experiment, which takes lots of photos of the same place or object and displays them in a reconstructed 3D space. Sounds fun - as long as you're using XP SP2 or Vista. Which I'm not. Bah.

Boonika
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Nov 2006 12:06pm

These guys have us down as a site that you must visit, and they have quite the repository of artists and artwork to look through, so it's only fair that we return the favour.

Virtual Residency
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Nov 2006 12:01pm

Ars Virtua - a new media centre and gallery located in Second Life - is soliciting proposals for its artist-in-residence programme. Applications close on 21 November and there's more information on Ars Virtua's site.

Microbia
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Nov 2006 11:01am

Floris Kaayk and Sil van der Woerd bring you a collection of short films from their own peculiar world, Microbia, mixing motion graphics and live action. Annoyingly Metalosis Maligna, the one I'd really like to see, is offline at the moment, but they say it'll be back online in a few weeks.

Amateur
Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Nov 2006 5:04pm

Lasse Gjertsen can't play the drums or the piano, but he's a bit of a whizz with the old video editing, which enables him to play both at the same time, really well.

Non-Format
Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Nov 2006 3:51pm

Kjell Ekhorn and Jon Forss have a lot of decent music packaging going on among other projects, with a particularly nice line in typography - I'm surprised that we don't appear to have featured them in Computer Arts yet. Although it's entirely likely that we have, and I've completely overlooked them.

Foccaland
Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Nov 2006 3:12pm

Joe's on holiday in Brazil at the moment, and it'd be nice to say that he took a few minutes out to let me know about Marcos Paulo's site with its great mixture of work. But he didn't. I found it myself.

DR3I v3
Computer Arts - Jim - 10 Nov 2006 12:37pm

Missed the first two versions, but this is a fun little test of your manual dexterity. Or lack thereof. Simply move the red dot through the scrolling maze and try not to touch anything except the other dots. Link.
Cheval Noir
Computer Arts - Jim - 08 Nov 2006 3:30pm

Plenty of great stuff on show here from Aya Kato - in the Work section of the site she says that she's appearing soon in Computer Arts, but I'm not exactly sure how up-to-date that page is, so I probably missed her. Shame.

Gwon Osang
Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Nov 2006 4:22pm

More sculpture for you - Gwon Osang's work is made up of hundreds of close-up photographs, all pasted together over a three-dimensional form.

Very Short Stories
Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Nov 2006 4:00pm

Wired magazine asked 33 writers to come up with short stories exactly six words long, and then gave the results to five graphic designers. The stories themselves are great fun and the resulting imagery is the icing on the cake.

Sphere Shots
Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Nov 2006 2:43pm

Panoramic photos, deformed in a spherical kind of way to create strange little planetoids. There's probably a flickr group devoted to this kind of thing, but I couldn't find it, so you're stuck with this awful Comic Sans-infected site. Sorry.

Robert Lazzarini
Computer Arts - Jim - 06 Nov 2006 4:47pm

Sculpture isn't strictly within our remit, but Robert Lazzarini's anamorphically distorted objects, and the techniques he uses to create them, are fascinating. There's an in-depth interview here in which he explains his methods and the lengths he goes to in producing his art.

Daniel Egnéus
Computer Arts - Jim - 06 Nov 2006 4:05pm

Some great work here in a very distinctive freehand style. If you want to see his work close up, Daniel's taking part in 4Wall's Production Lines exhibition in London later this month along with ilovedust, D-FUSE and others.

Guess The Logo
Computer Arts - Jim - 06 Nov 2006 3:15pm

This little multiple choice quiz should be nice and easy, especially for us clued-up types who know about logos and that, shouldn't it? Heck, it even flashes the logos across the screen while it loads, and they're all sites you know. A doddle, right? Ha.

High Fashion Crime Scenes
Computer Arts - Jim - 06 Nov 2006 11:00am

Melanie Pullen takes vintage crime scene photographs from the archives of the Los Angeles Police Department and recreates them as fashion shoots with the victims decked out in haute couture.

Watch The KLF Burn A Million Quid
Computer Arts - Jim - 03 Nov 2006 5:17pm

The greatest art stunt ever? One of the stupidest things ever? Who can tell? Only Bill and Jimmy, and they're not saying.

Computer Arts - Jim - 03 Nov 2006 11:37am

Our fantasy-tastic sister mag, ImagineFX, has its own brand new Web site up and running, and to celebrate it's holding a competition in conjunction with pro graphics card company PNY. Design an image for PNY's ad campaign and you could win an NVIDIA Quadro FX 1500 graphics card. Find out more here.

My Animated World
Computer Arts - Jim - 03 Nov 2006 11:16am

Six months of work went into making this piece of human stop-motion animation. Proper job all round.

Plantage
Computer Arts - Jim - 02 Nov 2006 11:26am

No massive surprises from this piece by Amanita Design - a Flash music video made up of their stock-in-trade close-ups of mossy branches and animated creatures, complementing a gentle tune by Danish band, Under Byen. The result is some pleasantly chilled viewing.

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
