Mostly Wanted Computer Arts - Jim - 02 Nov 2006 10:22am Local boy Tom Bagshaw has a really nice line in illustration going on. Not to mention a fair old bit of graphics and new media work, but it's the illustrative stuff that really caught my eye. http://www.mostlywanted.com/
Open-Source Tube Map Computer Arts - Jim - 01 Nov 2006 4:07pm It may be a bit of a design classic, but the map of the London Underground that we all know and loved (or perhaps loved, until Transport For London started getting heavy with people making their own versions) isn't particularly geographically accurate. This version, calculated from GPS data, is.
Domo Arigato Mr Robototron Computer Arts - Jim - 01 Nov 2006 11:23am My friend Jimaroid made this a couple of years ago, and yesterday, on a whim, I badgered him into uploading it to YouTube. It's an endearingly strange set of snaps of a Robotron Grunt's Japanese holiday. Let's make it into one of these modern Internet memes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ec6z8erCTfY
Mandarine24 Computer Arts - Jim - 31 Oct 2006 4:45pm This Montreal post-production studio has a new site up and running to show off its wares, and it's a cracking piece of work with lots of neat motion graphics trickery and a great portfolio to look through. http://www.mandarine24.com
Frankenstyles Computer Arts - Jim - 31 Oct 2006 3:20pm Somehow I've managed to overlook Stephen Kelleher's various appearances in Computer Arts and Projects. Just in case you've missed them as well, pay a visit to his site in order to catch up. http://www.frankenstyles.com/
Random Google Page Computer Arts - Jim - 31 Oct 2006 2:34pm Why make life difficult for yourself? If you've run out of internets and can't think of anything interesting to search for, just hit this page and it'll feed a random search term into Google and take you straight to the first page that comes up. The possibilities for time-wasting are terrifying. http://www.bleb.org/random/
Sound Mirrors DVD Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Oct 2006 2:38pm Weird synchronicity moment - as you'll notice if you scroll down a little bit, I added Projects' profile of Ninja Tune to the site this morning. And then at lunchtime I discovered a just-released DVD version of Coldcut's Sound Mirrors, featuring a full set of videos plus a CD packed with remixes of the singles. Naturally I had to buy it. http://www.ninjatune.net/
Ooh! Review! Computer Arts - Jim - 27 Oct 2006 11:19am Wondering just how good these swanky new Mac Pros are? Wonder no more; I've just inserted our review into the site. No, really, the pleasure's all mine. http://www.computerarts.co.uk/reviews
E-VISC-ER-ATE Computer Arts - Jim - 26 Oct 2006 4:22pm If you're planning on doing something unspeakable to a pumpkin this weekend, you'll have to go quite a way to improve on this effort. I'm not even allowed a pumpkin. Although, to be fair, it would only attract ghastly urchins. http://www.evilmadscientist.com/article.php/DalekPumpkin
The Zymoglyphic Museum Computer Arts - Jim - 26 Oct 2006 4:04pm They say you can find anything on the Internet, but amazingly there's only one site that features a collection of Zymoglyphic art, artefacts and natural history. Unbelievable. http://www.zymoglyphic.org/galleries.html

Kinetic Computer Arts - Jim - 24 Oct 2006 11:49am It resizes your browser window without so much as a by-your-leave, but this Singapore studio's site's brand of hand-drawn Flash animation easily makes up for such a diabolical liberty. http://www.kinetic.com.sg/

Firefox 2.0 Computer Arts - Jim - 24 Oct 2006 10:20am Hot on the heels of IE7, here comes the latest version of Firefox. I'm sure there are loads of improvements over previous versions, but the only ones I've really noticed so far are the shinier tabs with their own little Close buttons. Just after I'd learned that you could close tabs by middle-clicking on them. It's officially out at 1AM tonight (BST); look around, though, and you can find it now. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Ah, Yes, The Newsletter... Computer Arts - Jim - 19 Oct 2006 3:10pm No, I haven't sent out last week's newsletter yet, and it's not looking good for tonight's edition, either. The latest word is that the new system won't be ready until next week. Apologies if you're feeling starved of my weekly rambling intro - I'll try to make up for it by cramming a little extra rambling in here over the next few days. http://www.futurenewsletters.com/
Internet Explorer 7 Computer Arts - Jim - 19 Oct 2006 2:51pm It's finally out and I'm hearing all sorts of things about it, ranging from "It's aces!" to "It's horrible!". I just know that if I installed it on this box I'd end up unable to edit the site, so I'll leave it to you. If, like, you want to. http://www.microsoft.com/ie
Polyorama Computer Arts - Jim - 19 Oct 2006 2:40pm A fun idea based on an 18th century toy consisting of illustrated card strips that could be put together to create random landscapes. Not much on show yet, but it's open for submissions if you want to try your hand at creating your own polyorama. http://polyorama.joshmillard.com/
Hope Gangloff Computer Arts - Jim - 19 Oct 2006 2:31pm Nothing particularly computery about this Hope Gangloff's art; she seems to work entirely within the ball point pen medium. Kind of like the stuff I used to draw on my work folders at university. Only good, obviously. http://www.hopegangloff.com/
Taste The Rainbow Computer Arts - Jim - 18 Oct 2006 10:29am Oh hold on. Wrong campaign. Here's the latest advert for Sony's Bravia range of tellies; instead of bouncy balls in San Francisco it's exploding paint in Glasgow, and again there's not a trace of CG. http://www.bravia-advert.com/paint/thead/
Have Your Kayak And Eat It Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Oct 2006 11:27pm I don't normally link b3ta stuff, but this has had me giggling like a Japanese schoolgirl. Brilliant work by b3ta boarder, timpractical. http://www.sayagain.co.uk/b3tapix/images/orcakayakBig.gif
Maggie Taylor Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Oct 2006 12:37pm Maggie's gently surreal work has a slightly photorealistic look, achieved by placing objects directly onto a flatbed scanner and then putting them together in Photoshop. The results are well worth checking out. http://www.maggietaylor.com/
Kiddphunk Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Oct 2006 12:31pm A long horizontal sprawl of generative art created by Ian Timourian; it'd be nice to see some of it move. http://www.mandalabrot.net/

New Downloads Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Oct 2006 3:21pm Take a look in the Downloads section and you'll find two new offerings; from 3D World there's Burning Safari, this month's showreel selection; and from me and Roddy there's a new desktop wallpaper featuring the work of our latest cover star, Edvard Scott. Go fetch. http://www.computerarts.co.uk/downloads
Where's The Newsletter? Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Oct 2006 12:17pm Jolly good question. The quick answer is that it's sitting here on my hard disk. The slightly longer answer is that we're switching to a new system and it's not quite ready yet. As soon as it's turned on I'll get on the case - next week, by the look of things. http://www.futurenewsletters.com/
Time Capsule Computer Arts - Jim - 11 Oct 2006 12:58pm An electronic anthropology project from Yahoo - for the next month they're collecting the voices, images and stories of the online global community, to be preserved for future generations. Head over and make your own contribution to history. http://timecapsule.yahoo.com/
ConcreteBlonde Computer Arts - Jim - 11 Oct 2006 12:09pm Some very nice fine art, web and print work from Cindy Workman on one of those sites that insists on launching a full-screen window. It's a guaranteed way of annoying me, but it seems to happen so often I'm getting numb to it. http://www.concreteblonde.com/
Thinkdust Computer Arts - Jim - 11 Oct 2006 12:06pm Alex Haigh's agency hasn't been going long but he's already racked up an impressive collection of work, all on show here. http://www.thinkdust.com/
When Motor Manufacturers Attack Computer Arts - Jim - 11 Oct 2006 10:16am I hope these are real and not some home Photoshop job. Handbags at dawn stuff from BMW, Audi and Subaru, until Bentley wades in and flattens them all with one fantastic, soon-to-be-iconic (I hope) image. http://www.eatliver.com/bmw-audi-subaru-bentley/

Entries close on 10 January 2007, but if you get your entry in before 10 November you'll receive a 10% discount, so don't put it off. http://awards07.dandad.org/launch |
Why Do You Do What You Do? Computer Arts - Jim - 10 Oct 2006 3:50pm Because somebody has to do it and I'm too much of a control freak to leave it to anyone else. http://www.wdydwyd.com/
Polar Rose Computer Arts - Jim - 10 Oct 2006 12:56pm Not much here at the moment, but the prospect of a browser plugin that uses facial recognition technology to search for people in photographs seems pretty exciting to me. One to keep an eye on. http://www.polarrose.com/
Battle of the Bands Computer Arts - Jim - 09 Oct 2006 4:23pm Sick and utterly wrong in places, this motion graphics collaboration between Ugly Picture and Man vs Magnet is also really rather amusing. Amazing what you can do with a bunch of album covers and a twisted mind. Link.
Sketch Show Computer Arts - Jim - 09 Oct 2006 3:03pm They get up to some fun things at MIT. Here's a brilliant demonstration of a sketch-powered design program that lets users draw straight onto the screen and then set things in motion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZNTgglPbUA
Colours Are Brighter Computer Arts - Jim - 05 Oct 2006 2:48pm This looks like being the best album for kids since the seminal Children's Favourites, which featured Jon Pertwee and chums doing, among others, The Runaway Train and Three Little Fishes. Curated by Belle and Sebastian and starring the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Four Tet and the Flaming Lips , it's all in aid of Save The Children and it's out on 16 October. I can't wait. http://www.coloursarebrighter.com/
| Line Rider Jumps Shark Computer Arts - Jim - 05 Oct 2006 11:08am I said this could be the beginning of something interesting, didn't I? Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!
Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.
Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
