Radio Active
Computer Arts - Jim - 03 Aug 2006 11:36am

This is strangely brilliant - a page that tracks what songs are playing on US radio stations right now, and pops their titles up on a big map. That's all it does. I've been staring at it for far too long already.

Nokia Shorts 06
Computer Arts - Jim - 02 Aug 2006 3:10pm

The call's out for entries for this year's Nokia Shorts competition - they're looking for the best 15-second film of the year. That's right, 15 seconds. There are swish phones as prizes and a special category for films created on mobiles, with a trip to the Cannes Film Festival for the winner.

Potatoland
Computer Arts - Jim - 02 Aug 2006 10:36am

Lots and lots of weird Java toys to play with here, but sadly I can't find much in the way of potatoes. Perhaps I'm not looking hard enough.

Nemeton
Computer Arts - Jim - 02 Aug 2006 10:35am

Coming on strong like a set of stamps, it's an archive of old Shamen sites. Admittedly from after the point where they crossed from rather good to Chas'n'Rave, but there's some good artwork here if you look for it.

Cats That Look Like Hitler
Computer Arts - Jim - 01 Aug 2006 5:02pm

I wouldn't normally, but, y'know. It's cats. That look like Hitler. I'm particularly enjoying the complaints section.

Feric Studio
Computer Arts - Jim - 01 Aug 2006 11:54am

Eric Feng's work blends East and West, past and present, natural and mechanical and, on top of it all, looks rather good. "Creating art makes me high," he says. Fair enough.

Wallpaper?
Computer Arts - Jim - 01 Aug 2006 11:02am

I knew I had something knocking around on my hard disk waiting to be used. So here you go - another wonderful bit of Computer Arts desktop wallpaper, this time from the pixel brush of Drew Flaherty. I may look into getting widescreen formats for future offerings - anyone interested?

The Politically Incorrect Alphabet
Computer Arts - Jim - 31 Jul 2006 3:11pm

Naturally I'm shocked and appalled and urge you all not to click on this disgraceful link, ever.

Jeremy Frusco
Computer Arts - Jim - 31 Jul 2006 3:07pm

The navigation here is a bit broken (white arrows on a white background - gah) but once you work it out there's some really good imagery on show here.

Dave Bollinger
Computer Arts - Jim - 31 Jul 2006 2:38pm

A good few nice-looking generative toys on show here, plus a handful of little downloadable games - for PC owners only, I'm afraid. Not that I'm complaining.

Amoeba
Computer Arts - Jim - 25 Jul 2006 4:13pm

Who said you can't print on water? Here's a strange prototype that uses wave generators and Bessel functions to 'print' letters on the surface of a small pool. Why? Why not?
Bristol Graffiti
Computer Arts - Jim - 25 Jul 2006 12:19pm

Possibly the only place in the world where you'll find a wall tagged with the phrase, "GERT LUSH".

Jeremy Dower
Computer Arts - Jim - 24 Jul 2006 12:28pm

Weird character design, some pixel art and other bizarre stuff - what is it with people from Australia called Jeremy, eh?

Scriptographer
Computer Arts - Jim - 24 Jul 2006 11:40am

Extend your Illustrator tools through the magic of JavaScript - either make your own or download ready-made scripts - with this new plug-in for both CS and CS2. But not for Intel Macs, yet.

Cromm Cruac
Computer Arts - Jim - 21 Jul 2006 4:49pm

Marcin Zemczak's site is a fantastic piece of Flash work, even if you don't much care for the Gigeresque stylings. Me, I'm all for Gigeresque stylings.

Mirrorman
Computer Arts - Jim - 21 Jul 2006 12:29pm

That's how I feel in the mornings as well. Step this way for the first of what I presume is going to be a quartet of animations (with bonus wallpaper and screensaver goodies) from the good people at NOWWASHYOURHANDS.

North Kingdom
Computer Arts - Jim - 21 Jul 2006 12:17pm

How much Flash can you handle? This Swedish agency's site is positively awash with it, and some of it's award-winning Flash as well.

Superbrands Last All Summer Long
Computer Arts - Jim - 20 Jul 2006 4:57pm

Cunningly coinciding with Projects' new Brand Identity issue, Superbrands and YouGov have released their list of the top 500 UK brands. The winner? Microsoft, with Apple lagging behind at number 25.

WallSpankers
Computer Arts - Jim - 20 Jul 2006 4:18pm

Another neat community site - this one's graffiti and sticker-focused, with the idea that members will upload their own stickers for everyone else to print out and stick up all over the world. Jeremyville's already a member - get there before Jon Burgerman joins up.

Lightroom Beta 3
Computer Arts - Jim - 19 Jul 2006 11:07am

Blimey - they've only gone and released a Windows version as well. Which is one in the eye for everyone who reckons that Lightroom's just an Adobe ploy to stick a great big spanner in Aperture's works.

Stop-Motion Space Invaders
Computer Arts - Jim - 18 Jul 2006 2:19pm

Take one auditorium and a load of volunteers, spend four hours moving the volunteers around and taking still frames, and here are the results - Space Invaders, made out of people.

LogoPond
Computer Arts - Jim - 18 Jul 2006 12:49pm

A place to fish for ideas - seems there's a community site for everyone these days, and this one's for logo designers.

The First 24 Minutes of A Scanner Darkly
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 Jul 2006 4:46pm

It's already being spoken of as the best ever film adaptation of a Philip K. Dick story, but in case that's not enough to tempt you into the cinema, here's the first 24 minutes of A Scanner Darkly to watch, as you might have surmised, for free.

Super Serif Brothers
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 Jul 2006 11:04am

Graphics? Who needs graphics? Not this low-tech puzzle-type game.

Sensitive Floor
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Jul 2006 4:46pm

Quite a nice idea, this - an animated floor that reacts when people walk across it. Take a look at the gallery and see what it's capable of. Shame that it has to run off a projector - a deluxe version running on flat screens would be amazing.

Monkey Lander
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Jul 2006 2:59pm

It is a truth universally acknowledged that any game can be instantly improved by simply adding a monkey. And here's the proof.

Matthew Mahon
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Jul 2006 12:15pm

I've had this zooming-in-and-out gallery bookmarked for a couple of days and I'm still not sure whether I like it or not. So I'll leave it up to you to decide.

Lovemarks
Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Jul 2006 12:13pm

Brands are history - Lovemarks represent a future beyond brands. Lovemarks reach your heart as well as your mind, creating an intimate, emotional connection that you just can’t live without. Ever. Yeah, sounded a bit hippy and mad to us too, until we noticed that Saatchi and Saatchi are behind it.

Let's Take Pictures!
Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Jul 2006 12:05pm

A fun little Flash-powered photo gallery featuring shots of London, France, Brazil and Italy - maybe a shade too heavy on the Web2.0 functionality, but good work overall by Creaktif and Mopi.

Not The New Mac Ads
Computer Arts - Jim - 12 Jul 2006 4:53pm

"Basically, I 'stole' footage from Psycho, and then 'borrowed' music from the Gnarles Barkley song, and put 'em all together. It's mad stupid."

Population: One
Computer Arts - Jim - 12 Jul 2006 2:30pm

"Makes you feel so sort of insignificant, doesn't it?" "Yeah, yeah... Can we have your liver, then?" "All right, you talked me into it."

Psst! Pass It On...
Computer Arts - Jim - 12 Jul 2006 12:45pm

Take a group of motion graphics artists based across the world and get them to take turns in creating a series of animated shorts - each film is made up of three segments, created sequentially by different teams. With fabulous results.

Kissing Garden
Computer Arts - Jim - 12 Jul 2006 12:21pm

Mmm, soothing. Chill out, kiss fruit and plant your own fruit for other visitors to this strange enchanted garden to kiss so that it'll grow. All a little weird, but the music's quite pleasant.

Kevin Tiell
Computer Arts - Jim - 10 Jul 2006 4:24pm

Some lovely photography on show here, especially Portfolio 1, which contains some fantastic close-ups of pinball tables. Hey, I like pinball, all right?

Daxo
Computer Arts - Jim - 10 Jul 2006 12:54pm

Ow! My brain! This portfolio site for musician and designer Hans Reichel is full of clicky weirdness - just the place to kill a few hours or more.

Koko3
Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Jul 2006 3:49pm

It's hard for me to get too excited about Finnish interior designers, but the excellent use of Flash to illustrate Helsinki-based Koko3's work has just about changed all that.

Nudist Trampolining
Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Jul 2006 12:59pm

And to think that a scant few minutes ago I was completely stuck for ideas as to what I should get up to this weekend.

The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers
Computer Arts - Jim - 06 Jul 2006 2:34pm

Hurrah! Gilbert Shelton's come up with the first new Freak Brothers strip in 10 years, and he's only gone and put it online. Plus you'll find a link to the upcoming Freak Brothers stop-motion movie, Grass Roots. Can't wait.

Marian Bantjes
Computer Arts - Jim - 06 Jul 2006 2:31pm

Lots of nice vector work on show here, as well as work in other media including, er, peony petals.

Etched in Time
Computer Arts - Jim - 05 Jul 2006 4:32pm

If pixel art isn't old-skool enough for you, take a look at this - incredibly detailed drawings created on everyone's first art package, the Etch-A-Sketch.

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
