Jesus Dress-Up
Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Apr 2006 11:38am

Because we all get the urge to dress up Jesus every now and then, right? Bizarrely, it's gone all Wizard of Oz since I last looked at it - who'd have thought Jesus would be a friend of Dorothy?

Desktopography
Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Apr 2006 11:18am

That Pete Harrison gets everywhere these days, doesn't he? Here he curates a collection of nature-inspired desktop wallpapers. Which reminds me that I'd better get on to Roddy about putting a new Computer Arts wallpaper together.

Spirograph
Computer Arts - Jim - 06 Apr 2006 10:35am

All the fun of Spirograph without all that messing about with pens and paper and all that - just click the Random button. Which isn't actually much fun, really. Still, you live and learn. Link.

CSS Naked Day
Computer Arts - Jim - 05 Apr 2006 10:48am

I'm not sure if this is an official holiday - you know, like Talk Like A Pirate Day - or not. And to be honest, I wouldn't know where to start turning all the CSS off here. And I'd probably get in trouble if I did, anyway. But don't let that stop you from joining in.

Kyle Reed
Computer Arts - Jim - 04 Apr 2006 11:20am

This takes me back to my teenage attempts at collage work with magazines and scissors and glue and that. My efforts were rubbish; this stuff isn't.

Flying Cat
Computer Arts - Jim - 04 Apr 2006 10:42am

Flying Cat Toys seem to have given their site a good old spring clean at some point in the recent past and it's not bad at all. We were particularly pleased to notice that John Burgerman bears a passing resemblance to Shane McGowan - a sober version, naturally.

Ripple Tank
Computer Arts - Jim - 04 Apr 2006 10:41am

Yeah, I'm a sucker for this sort of thing. It's a Java simulation of a ripple tank with loads of parameters for you to tweak, enabling you to get some really nice patterns going. And it has a 3D view option as well. So much for getting any proper work done this morning...

Elvis is Dead
Computer Arts - Jim - 03 Apr 2006 12:21pm

Lots and lots of great stuff in Stephanie J's site, although it took me a while to realise that it scrolls sideways. But to be fair, my head's a bit fuzzy this morning.

Book of Numbers
Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Mar 2006 5:16pm

Any idea what this is all about? No, neither have I. I haven't even seen any numbers in it. But it has to mean something, right? I'd hate to have wasted everyone's time on it.

Tactile 3D
Computer Arts - Jim - 29 Mar 2006 12:09pm

I'm a little suspicious of 3D desktop things and I've heard mixed reports on Tactile 3D's performance, but who knows? It may be right up your street if you have lots of files to keep track of and a hankering for a 3D front end.

Here's an interesting art video. Two people from New York walking around with blue suits on, filming what's in front of them, while being filmed themselves. Then a Chroma Key effect is used to make them appear invisible.

Monty makes a comeback
Computer Arts - Tom - 27 Mar 2006 11:19am

KERA-TV in Dallas has unearthed a rare interview with the Monty Python troupe, which was their first US interview in 1975. It hasn't been seen in over 30 years and, rather than sell it, they've very kindly put it up on the Internet for everybody to watch.

The Knockoff Project
Computer Arts - Jim - 22 Mar 2006 4:40pm

Documenting album covers that look like other album covers. A little too much Weird Al Jankovic in there for my liking and the images are understandably small to save on bandwidth. All jolly good fun, though.

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
