GROW Tower Computer Arts - Jim - 21 Jan 2009 12:47pm Few things in life make me happier than a new version of my favourite daft Japanese Flash game. As always, just click things and watch them grow, then spend far too much time working out the correct order to do things in. http://www.eyezmaze.com/eyezblog_en/blog/2009/01/grow_tower.html

Pretty Loaded Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Jan 2009 12:30pm Lord knows how long I've spent staring at Flash preloaders over the years, and there have been more than a few occasions when the preloader's turned out to be more entertaining than the end result. Now Big Spaceship has decided to celebrate the preloader with an online museum; just hit the link and sit back as the preloaders keep on coming. http://www.prettyloaded.com/

This time it involves microwave ovens and, thankfully, no gerbils. http://www.akqa.com/happychristmas/ |

Genetic Art Computer Arts - Jim - 08 Dec 2008 2:39pm Now this is rather impressive. Roger Alsing wrote a program to generate polygons from a string of DNA, then set it up to copy and slightly mutate the string, render a new set of polygons from it, then compare the resulting image to a source image. If it looks more like the source image than the previous iteration then the old DNA gets overwritten with the mutated version and the program repeats. He then decided to see if it could paint a replica of the Mona Lisa using just 50 semi-transparent polygons... http://rogeralsing.com/2008/12/07/genetic-programming-evolution-of-mona-lisa/

The Grid System Computer Arts - Jim - 02 Dec 2008 4:38pm Early days for this grid-obsessed resource site, with not an enormous amount of grid-related content collected so far, but with the aim of being the ultimate resource on grid systems it's worth a look and a bookmark if you ever find yourself using grids or even using the word 'grid' far too many times in a single sentence. Like that one. http://www.thegridsystem.org/
Bio-Bak Computer Arts - Jim - 01 Dec 2008 12:53pm Blimey, that's good! If you only look at one more Flash-based site this year, make it this one. This man's clearly some kind of dangerous Flash wizard. http://www.bio-bak.nl/
Multicolr Search Lab Computer Arts - Jim - 01 Dec 2008 12:23pm I'm sure this isn't the first colour-based Flickr search I've ever seen, but by Jiminy it's good. Multicolr Search Lab gives you a palette of 120 colours to click, and you can use up to ten of them to search through 10 million of the most interesting Flickr pictures, with results appearing as close to instantly as makes no difference. http://labs.ideeinc.com/multicolr

Processing 1.0 Computer Arts - Jim - 27 Nov 2008 10:57am After about seven years in development, Processing, the fairly straightforward programming language that makes it quite easy for artists and designers to make great-looking things, has finally hit version 1.0. Another reason for me to shunt it closer to the top of my Things I Really Ought To Get My Head Round list. http://www.processing.org/
Craig Shields Computer Arts - Jim - 25 Nov 2008 5:10pm A good mix of styles here from Craig, with a really nice range of illustration and typography, including one piece that'll make your eyes hurt something chronic. I need to stop hitting BACK when I've finished looking at a picture, though. http://www.surpy.co.uk/
How Cool Is This? Computer Arts - Jim - 20 Nov 2008 12:20pm I'll tell you: it's very cool indeed. You'll need a printer and a webcam, and then you can have far too much fun playing with a little augmented reality monster. Excellent work from Digital Pictures Interactive. http://interactive.digitalpictures.com.au/?p=392

Toshiba Timesculpture Computer Arts - Jim - 12 Nov 2008 2:14pm Forget about Sony's Bravia adverts - Toshiba have just raised the bar with this amazing advert, made with over 200 video cameras. It looks very ordinary at first, and then it all kicks off, leaving you wondering how the hell they did it. There's also a Making Of piece to accompany it, but that would spoil the illusion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYPn1BrTNCE
eBaltimore Computer Arts - Jim - 12 Nov 2008 10:32am The latest eBoy poster is out, and which world-famous metropolis have they chosen for a cheeky pixel makeover this time? That's right, it's Baltimore Docks! I can only assume that they've been seriously overdoing it on The Wire lately. I'm not going to look too closely at it because I'm only a few episodes into season two and I'd rather avoid any spoilers. Already spotted Kima, though. http://shop.eboy.com/products/baltimore-docks-poster
The grads have it Computer Arts - Amy - 11 Nov 2008 4:45pm Friend and collaborator of Chris Clarke (the Bristol-based graphic designer featured in the Exposure section of the current issue of Computer Arts), Alex Ostrowski is a graduate worth watching. Having graduated with a first-class honours in graphic design from the University of the West of England this summer, Alex’s striking work expertly walks the line between clear, engaging concept communication and beautiful execution, and has already garnered him an RSA Design Directions Award and a D&AD Student Awards nomination. For more on the hottest graduates breaking into the graphics and illustration worlds over the next year – particularly if you think you’re one of them – see the January issue of Computer Arts for news of our 2009 Graduate Showcase and how you could be a part of it. http://www.alexostrowski.com
Dazed Cover Versions Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Nov 2008 12:35pm Dazed & Confused magazine's January issue is about what it means to be young and British today, and having asked everyone under 18 in the UK to supply ideas, they're now asking the kids to design the cover as well. They supply a zip file containing three Hedi Slimane images as well as all the other bits you'll need, and the rest is up to you, presuming you're under 18. "If you’re actually a 37-year-old graphic designer and live with your mum," they add, "we can’t stop you entering but it would be a bit weird, wouldn’t it?" Find out more here.
Going (T-)Postal Computer Arts - Amy - 04 Nov 2008 5:32pm Is it a magazine? Is it an installation? Is it gym gear? A T-shirt loving design buff’s dream is what Swedish T-shirt subscription company T-Post is. Each month, subscribers to T-Post receive a new ‘issue’ – that being a T-shirt designed exclusively for T-Post by one of the world’s hottest graphic designers or illustrators, with their design springing from a topical subject that month. Past T-Post designers include Danish duo Hvass&Hannibal, Jeremyville and Ragnar Persson. http://www.t-post.se

Some Type of Wonderful Computer Arts - Jim - 29 Oct 2008 2:55pm To celebrate its love of good typography, Lifelounge commissioned 12 of its favourite artists and designers, including Alex Trouchut and Si Scott, to each produce an image related to a designated month of the year. Each design is available as a signed A1 giclée print, or if the price is a little steep you can buy them all together as a limited edition A3 calendar. http://www.lifelounge.com/sometypeofwonderful/
typeface.js Computer Arts - Jim - 27 Oct 2008 4:41pm Here's a fantastic little hack for any web designers who like to use custom fonts but are sick of having to do them as images or sIFR. Install typeface.js and the fonts you want you want to use, then you can put your text straight into the HTML. It's early days and a little limited - you can't copy the resulting text as it appears to be generates as a set of PNG files, and you wouldn't want to use it for a swathe of body text. Still very much worth a look, though. http://typeface.neocracy.org/
Chad VanGaalen Computer Arts - Amy - 22 Oct 2008 10:12am The sickeningly talented Canadian creative Chad VanGaalen wriggles his fingers in a number of artistic pies, illustrating the covers of and animating the videos for his grunge-informed tunes. Not only does VanGaalen sound something like Grandaddy covering The Flaming Lips but, with indie kings Sub Pop as his label, it’s safe to assume that his cartoon-ish animations aren’t going to get any less freaky and surreal. For your mythical animal animation fix, check out his video for the song ‘Red Hot Drops’ online now. http://www.subpop.com/artists/chad_vangaalen
The Making of the Star Guitar Video Computer Arts - Jim - 20 Oct 2008 3:12pm Everyone with a soul knows that Michel Gondry's video for The Chemical Brothers' Star Guitar is one of the best things ever in the history of the world. What you probably haven't seen is his prototype version made out of oranges and trainers and videotapes and stuff. Feel free to watch him mapping everything out on pencil and paper, but the fun really kicks off around the 7-minute mark. Watch and learn.
ClickforArt Relaunched Computer Arts - Tom - 20 Oct 2008 12:36pm Art print site clickforart.com has relaunched with a snazzy new face-lift and a huge new range of prints and canvases. More on the venture at the site below. http://www.wallcandyart.co.uk/
Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!
Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.
Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com
Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
