Get on with it!
Computer Arts - Jim - 12 Oct 2005 4:41pm

Having trouble concentrating on work? It can be a right pain, especially when you're freelance and Diagnosis Murder's on. So you might want to try the "(10+2)*5" Procrastination Hack - work in ten-minute bursts then take a two-minute break, and repeat until you've trained your brain to concentrate. Link.
Escher and the Droste Effect
Computer Arts - Jim - 12 Oct 2005 11:23am

Life seemed so simple back when we thought Escher's pictures were just confusing to look at. And then a bunch of mathemeticians had at his Print Gallery. Check out the animated results and wonder just what was going on in the man's brain.

R.I.P. WYSIWYG
Computer Arts - Jim - 11 Oct 2005 12:35pm

WYSIWYG was a brilliant idea back when the only alternative was a screen full of formatting tags, but it's on its last legs, as anyone who's battled a gazillion menus and floating toolbars may already suspect. The future, says Jakob Nielsen, is the Results-Oriented UI. Or, What You Get Is What You See.

Multimedia, 1986-style
Computer Arts - Jim - 11 Oct 2005 11:32am

Remember the BBC's Domesday project? An all-encompassing survey of the UK, mostly undertaken by schoolchildren and made available on magical laserdisc technology? It's now available online. It's rather sweet, really.

Inquisitor
Computer Arts - Jim - 10 Oct 2005 12:55pm

A Google hack for those of us who can't be bothered with all that typing. Inquisitor comes up with best guesses at what you might be searching for as you type and can be frighteningly prescient.

Pets in Uniform
Computer Arts - Jo - 10 Oct 2005 11:32am

Though we don't want to drag Computer Arts down to the inane level of humour of sites like b3ta, we thought we should show you this.

Autodesk buys Alias
Computer Arts - Jim - 05 Oct 2005 11:36am

3D Studio and Maya jumping into bed together? We can already hear professional animators gnashing their teeth at the news - especially Lightwave users worried that this new 3D superpower will force their precious out of the business. Others think it's all a big fuss over nothing - find out more in the next issue of Computer Arts. Link.
Paint.NET
Computer Arts - Jim - 04 Oct 2005 5:10pm

Another free graphics app, and this one's designed to be a replacement for Windows' MS Paint software. Frankly a box of crayons would make a superior replacement for MS Paint, but Paint.NET looks quite swish.

Make a Pseudoscope
Computer Arts - Jim - 04 Oct 2005 10:51am

Alter your perception in an entirely legal way! A pseudoscope feeds your left-hand field of vision into your right eye and vice versa, mucking up perspective in a thoroughly bizarre way. It's all done with mirrors.

Placeopedia
Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Sep 2005 5:31pm

What do you get if you cross Google Maps with Wikipedia? A lovely interactive map that'll pull up Wikipedia articles on places of interest, that's what. Shame that following the Wikipedia links takes you away from the map, but it's a great start.

Mansion Impossible
Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Sep 2005 3:34pm

This property lark's easy - buy houses when they're cheap, flog them when they're expensive, repeat until you can afford a mansion. Beats all that mucking about with mortgages and surveys, and with more isometric pixel graphics than usual.

Pixen 2
Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Sep 2005 9:57am

Macs might rule at running Photoshop and being shiny and expensive, but when it comes to pixel art you're better off with a PC. Hell, you're better off with an Amiga. Or are you? Try Pixen 2 - possibly the only dedicated pixel art package for the Mac.

The Shining Remixed
Computer Arts - Jim - 29 Sep 2005 10:44am

What better way to start the day than with a touchy-feely remixed trailer for Kubrick's classic horror? Splendid.
Audrey Kawasaki
Computer Arts - Jim - 28 Sep 2005 3:52pm

Excellent portfolio site from an artist who we'd love purely on the basis of her brilliant name, if it wasn't for the fact that her work's great as well.

The World's Best-Looking Metro Stations
Computer Arts - Jim - 28 Sep 2005 12:30pm

A whistlestop tour of cities with metro systems that are actually nice to look at. Trains that go under the ground, eh? It ain't natural.

Diet Riot
Computer Arts - Jo - 27 Sep 2005 3:01pm

These bizarre 'food soldiers' including breakdancing sushi rolls and rap-loving squid are the product of Philipp Zurmoehle's vivid imagination.

Candykiller
Computer Arts - Jim - 27 Sep 2005 11:32am

Brian Taylor's online portfolio draws inspiration from all manner of comic and cartoon sources and mixes them together to make a pleasantly skewed cavalcade of imagery.

Modulobe
Computer Arts - Jim - 26 Sep 2005 2:46pm

Stuck for something to do this fine Monday? Why not build your own virtual creatures and watch them move - or at least writhe around uselessly until you get the hang of it.

Turning the Pages

School Band Does DJ Shadow
Computer Arts - Jim - 22 Sep 2005 12:10pm

'School band' - the sort of phrase that normally strikes terror into most people's hearts. This lot, however, decided to have a go at a couple of tracks off DJ Shadow's Endtroducing album, and they rock. How come I was always stuck doing medleys from the Wizard of Oz? Link.
Persistence of Ignorance
Computer Arts - Jim - 21 Sep 2005 10:37am

Yeah, so you think you're the biz with your Maya or your 3DSMax or your Lightwave. Pah. Real men do 3D by typing scenes into POV-Ray - or at least Jaime Vives Piqueres does. Impressive!

Massive Pink Rabbit Found on Italian Mountain
CA Projects - Kate - 21 Sep 2005 10:11am

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
