Blue Burgerman
Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Oct 2008 4:41pm

Another Computer Arts favourite, Jon Burgerman, continued his march towards total global domination yesterday with the ultimate accolade of a Blue Peter appearance in which he doodled on their wall. He'd have never got away with it in Biddy Baxter's day; on the other hand, back then you wouldn't have been able to watch it whenever you liked on the iPlayer.

The South West gets animated
Computer Arts - Amy - 15 Oct 2008 2:58pm

It looks like the sister city of Aardman’s base, Bristol, has come down with the animation bug. The 18th Bath Film Festival is this year hosting animation labs for both kids and adults new to the craft. The Junior Animation Lab welcomes those aged 13 to 18 for a three-day workshop (28 to 30 October) that will take them from imaginative script writing through to Flash and stop-frame animation techniques and even film distribution. The Adult Animation Lab takes place over two weekends (25 and 26 October, and 1 and 2 November) and, under the guidance of animators including the award-winning Mark Simon Hewis (The Life Size Zoetrope, The Chihuahua Messiah) covers script development, use of Flash and a variety of animation techniques, plus preparing your work for new media distribution platforms. The finished animations will be screened at the Make It Short event on the festival’s closing night. Tickets are priced at £100-£175 and are very limited.

Oh. My. God. The Aquarium's new exhibition of extreme Looney Tunes violence is just one more reason to love and venerate Jimmy Cauty. See it before Warner Bros' lawyers descend with the cease and desist notices.

Got Your Anorak?
Computer Arts - Amy - 14 Oct 2008 4:08pm

Being drawn to anything that’s endearingly naïve, nostalgic and, well, looks a bit of a shambles, I was chuffed when I chanced upon Anorak magazine. While it’s touted as ‘The happy mag for kids’, trusting it to the sticky mitts of an under-12 would be like handing them their Rusks on the family heirloom Lucienne Day crockery. A fantastic showcase of illustrators and a platform for original editorial feature concepts and design ideas, Anorak expertly walks the line between eye-popping, handcraft-style zine-y attitude and professional, commercially-minded execution. And you even get stickers thrown into the bargain.

MWM Graphics
Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Oct 2008 3:49pm

Matt W. Moore calls his signature style 'Vectorfunk', and I can see exactly where he's coming from; staring at some of his work for too long would probably have a similar effect on the brain to hanging out with George Clinton for an extended period of time. Just the right amount of "whoa" and "crazy", as Matt puts it.

The Eyeballing Game
Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Oct 2008 3:07pm

Reckon you're good at guesstimating things like angles and distances and whether things are crooked or not? Test yourself properly with this excellent little game. I'm currently office champion with an average error of just 2.73.

SymBook
Computer Arts - Jim - 01 Oct 2008 4:51pm

A pair of very nice Danish chaps dropped me a line this afternoon and asked if I could mention their new site that enables you easily to turn a PDF into a fully vectorised page-turning magazine for an entirely reasonable five dollars. Seems fair enough to me; you can take a look at a ready-made example and even upload and convert a PDF for free to see how it will look. They're still polishing a few bits and bobs, but it's already looking pretty neat.

Butterfly
Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Sep 2008 4:06pm

Glenn Marshall's Processing projects are exceedingly lovely, the sort of thing that makes me feel that I really ought to pull my finger out and have a go on Processing myself. Whatever you do, don't miss Metamorphosis, which blends gentle generative prettiness with Boards of Canada's Corsair.

D&AD Annual Launch
Computer Arts - Tom - 19 Sep 2008 10:03am

The great and the good of design descended on London's Royal College of Art last night for the launch of the 2008 D&AD Annual. This year’s bash saw the handover of the D&AD Presidency from Simon Waterfall to 2009’s President Garrick Hamm. Taking place at The Royal College’s Upper Gulbenkian Gallery, this year’s show took the form of a fully-fledged exhibition, with much of the Annual’s content on show. The 2008 D&AD Annual was designed by Neville Brody’s Research Studios and takes the title Digital Vs Anti-Digital as its theme. Research Studios’ Jeff Knowles will be showing you how he designed and produced the die-cut Annual design in the next issue of Computer Arts, on sale October 23. Members can also view this year’s Annual via the D&AD’s first digital edition, hosted on its site.

Just Add AKQA
Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Sep 2008 5:07pm

Ridiculous Design Rules
Computer Arts - Jim - 12 Sep 2008 12:37pm

As David Carson points out in our interview, the idea that designers need to learn the rules in order to break them is a load of old toffee. And coincidently enough, there's a new site up that aims to compile the definitive list of ridiculous design rules, on the grounds that every rule related to, or governing, design is ultimately ridiculous, since what works for you isn't going to work for everyone else. So the next time someone tells you that form follows function, point them in this direction.

Ligature across the Mersey
Computer Arts - Tom - 12 Sep 2008 10:21am

A typography project in Liverpool, and it isn’t to do with the city’s European Capital of Culture status for 2008? Well, it’s true, it’s called Letterpool.com and it’s a project set up by designers Aaron Bimpson and Adam Irwin. Visitors to the site are invited to upload examples of type work snapped in the city’s environs. A hundred pieces will be displayed at an exhibition this autumn, and published in a book in time for Christmas. Check it out from the link below.

FontPark 2.0
Computer Arts - Jim - 10 Sep 2008 12:42pm

Here's an easy way to make typographical illustrations. FontPark 2.0 features a ludicrously straightforward drag-and-drop interface, and it records the entire creative process so other people can see how you made your images and award them scores as well. Not a bad range of fonts, either; it'd be nice to see a downloadable version that let you use your own, though.

Play With Spider
Computer Arts - Jim - 05 Sep 2008 12:16pm

It's been a while since we've had any Friday frivolity, so here's an excellent piece of work from Tomas Eriksson, who set out to create a realistic spider in Flash. It has all sorts of parameters you can play with, you can feed it insects and either have it follow the mouse cursor around, drag it about the screen or control it directly. Great fun, unless you're an arachnophobe.

Lip Logo
Public User - 02 Sep 2008 10:34am

The original print of the Rolling Stones' iconic lips logo has been sold for a staggering £51,000 to London's Victoria and Albert Museum. The logo was created in 1970 by then-design student John Pasche, who was paid £50 for his efforts. Should have taken a royalty instead? Perhaps. But heck, how many designers make it to the V&A?

Google Chrome - The Comic
Computer Arts - Jim - 02 Sep 2008 10:00am

It's unlikely you're going to get to the end of the day without hearing about Chrome, Google's straight-out-of-nowhere web browser that looks to me like it's made of awesome. What you're less likely to hear about is the 38-page comic they've produced with Scott McCloud, which explains the thinking behind Chrome and the work that's gone into it. It's deeply geeky in a lot of places, but altogether a lovely piece of work that's got me a lot more excited about a new browser than I'd probably otherwise be.

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
