Handmade
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 Jul 2008 12:17pm

Here come the Brazilians again! Handmade is a nicely surreal short film by Denis Kamioka, shot in Brazil and post-produced in Barcelona, that makes use of unusual symbols to describe feelings at the beginning and end of a relationship. I found the streaming version a bit leaden, but luckily you can also download it in all manner of agreeable formats.

ffffound!
Computer Arts - Luke - 17 Jul 2008 10:52am

This may be a site that many of you are already aware of but I think it is certainly worthy of a mention as I can’t get enough of it at the moment. It is essentially a blog where people post images and then related imagery is shown to the side. A great one for all you visual junkies out there.

Think CMYK
Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Jul 2008 12:44pm

Zeixs has released a set of four books dedicated to work produced with only one colour of the CMYK-range, plus black. Each volume's available separately, or you can buy a specially-priced limited edition set of all four titles. It's available right here.
Living on the Edge
CA Projects - Julia - 10 Jul 2008 10:27am

Heralded as a major event for the Eden Project in Cornwall, Living on the Edge will be staged by acclaimed British artist Paul McGowan from August 8. Presented in the incredible surroundings of the Mediterranean Biome, the first installation will feature two huge paintings suspended from the roof structure and twelve new works on easels. Sounds impressive? With giant suspended airborne images and abstract mask paintings created using anatomical elements from extinct or endangered animals, we certainly think so.

Bonbon Kakku Fabrics
Computer Arts - Luke - 10 Jul 2008 10:06am

This is a nice site along a similar vein to 'Threadless' where you can upload a fabric print design and if it gets enough votes then your design will be printed.

Lively
Computer Arts - Jim - 09 Jul 2008 12:38pm

Google has just come out of nowhere with its own answer to Second Life, featuring 3D environments, custom avatars and the ability to pipe content into spaces or to embed spaces in your own pages. It runs in your browser (once you've downloaded the client) and it's Windows-only at the moment, but a Mac version is on the way. Notably, it actually inspired me to cave in and get a Google account in order to try it out. And then it crashed my Firefox inside a minute. Early days, though.

Handwritten Typographers
Computer Arts - Jim - 09 Jul 2008 11:24am

Cameron Adams found himself wondering what typographers' handwriting looked like. Then, instead of promptly forgetting about it, he asked a number of leading typographers, including Erik Spiekermann and Marian Bantjes, to send him a scan of their handwriting. And they did, with fascinating results. I wish we'd thought of this.

Whaleless
Computer Arts - Jim - 08 Jul 2008 4:33pm

Whaleless kicked off three years ago in italy's Pig Magazine as an art project to raise awareness of the plight of whales, with contributions from artists all over the world, and now it's coming to London. Opening on 11 July at the Strychnin Gallery, the exhibition features work from Catalina Estrada, Stuart Semple, Gemma Compton and many more, with a percentage of the profits going to Greenpeace.

This is Fun
CA Projects - Julia - 08 Jul 2008 10:59am

Inspired by childhood memories, London artist Chris Long presents This is Fun - a solo show at gallery hanahou featuring new original works using bright acrylics, capturing the exciting moments when children are free to play and be themselves in their natural environments. This is Fun will also feature a painted mural by the artist and drawings by local children, encouraging both waves of nostalgia for grownups, and feelings of creativity from younger visitors. Opening with the artist: July 10.

Golden Square Goes For Gold
CA Projects - Julia - 04 Jul 2008 3:16pm

Team Saatchi’s fundraising campaign for the Paralympics has got the power of Sir Paul McCartney and also features his music. The film features monochromatic photographs of athletes showing their particular sport, and also showing their disabilities. The imagery was perfected by Golden Square, a post-production company that creates high end 2D and 3D visual effects. -Ben Brunige

Flipping Heck
Computer Arts - Jim - 03 Jul 2008 5:06pm

If Hieronymus Bosch were alive today and had model-making kit and video cameras and editing gear and way too much time on his hands, it's entirely possible that he might have come up with something like this horrid but mesmerising short by Jake and Dinos Chapman. Obviously it's not really called Flipping Heck.

Van Gogh animation
CA Projects - Julia - 03 Jul 2008 2:18pm

Ever wondered how your designs might be reincarnated 100 or so years down the line? Van Gogh probably didn’t either – nevertheless, for a unique interpretation of his Starry Night, check out artist and animator Ging “Nanogirl” Miller’s “work in progress animation”. Painstakingly produced using a combination of 2D and 3D computer programs, the animation offers two new ways of looking at the painting: the first half is sequential, played in the order it was created; the second runs backwards. Definitely worth a view.

Algorithm Ink
Computer Arts - Jim - 03 Jul 2008 12:23pm

If you fancy getting a bit generative, take a look at this project from Aza Raskin. It's a port and extension of Context Free that uses the Canvas framework to enable you to code and play with your generative art on the fly, with loads of ready-made examples to check out and see how it's done. Of course, forget about running it on anything other than Firefox 3 or, if you really must, Opera 9.5.

Nikki Farquharson
Computer Arts - Jim - 02 Jul 2008 5:05pm

I stumbled upon Nikki's site the other day and was rather taken with her work. Have a look at the illustration section of her site; lots of intricate hand-drawn stuff that only occasionally gets the vector treatment. Her ongoing Mixed Media Girls project is especially lovely.

Pokedstudio
Computer Arts - Jim - 26 Jun 2008 4:52pm

I don't recall pokedstudio featuring in Computer Arts before, which seems awfully remiss, especially as their style seems terribly familiar. That's probably because they appear to come from the same dimension as Tado and Peskimo, which on the whole isn't a bad place to come from.

Infinite Fractal Robots
Computer Arts - Jim - 23 Jun 2008 4:52pm

A lovely bit of Processing work here from Matthew Kozak, who explains that he once built a robot that made a smaller copy of itself, which made a copy of itself, which made a copy of itself and so on.

Twenty-Six Types of Animals
Computer Arts - Jim - 18 Jun 2008 4:50pm

A pleasing project here from Jeremy Pettis - a series of 26 typographic illustrations making up a small but perfectly-formed menagerie. It would be nice. Click on each image for Jeremy's commentary on each design.

New Neave.com
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 Jun 2008 11:34am

Viva Calaca
Computer Arts - Jim - 02 Jun 2008 3:50pm

I thought I'd discovered another piece of awesome South American animation to match Guilherme Marcondes' amazing Tyger, but it turns out that the man behind Viva Calaca, Ritxi Ostáriz, is actually from Bilbao. Nevertheless you can't help but love his dancing cutout skeletons as they celebrate Dia de los Muertos.

Event Advertising by W+K
Computer Arts - Tom - 30 May 2008 4:33pm

For anyone who missed it, here's the link to the superb live-broadcast Honda ad that aired last night. Not so much an ad, more of a PR event, but refreshing, brilliantly realised and very creative all the same. A black pencil for next year?

QuarkXpress 8 Announced
Computer Arts - Tom - 29 May 2008 2:36pm

It's official at last - Quark has announced Xpress 8. And having already spent time in Denver last month playing around with the new features - we can safely say it all looks rather splendid. Chief among its new bits is a remodelled interface, new page navigation and previewing tools, refined HTML and SWF output support and a massive multilingual update. With all that said - and with rumours (wholly unsubstantiated we must add) of Adobe redying updates to its Creative Suite - we'll see how it fares against InDesign's dominance. You can read a full in depth article on Xpress 8 in Computer Arts issue 151, on sale July 5.

Progress

Top Computer Arts chum Scott Hansen has gone political, producing a limited edition poster for none other than Barack Obama. Says Scott, "I see Barack Obama as a leader who can inspire people to effect change and who himself can effect change. As an artist, it was only natural for me to want to create something that visually echoed these sentiments." There will be 5,000 of the posters available at $70 each when they go on sale; follow the link from Scott's page if you want to buy one.

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
