Computer Arts - Jim - 17 Sep 2007 4:56pm

What with everything going on and all that, I completely missed the release of a new version of everyone's favourite cheap and cheerful natural media painting app back in July, and only cottoned on when someone mentioned it on the CA forum today. Still, better late than never, eh?

Computer Arts - Jo - 14 Sep 2007 10:36am

For On/Off, curators Maxalot (Barcelona/Amsterdam) invited leading graphic studio Build (London), to collaborate with industrial architects Commonwealth (New York), for a 2D-3D face-off using cutting edge graphic software versus computer-numerically-controlled industrial design technology. The exhibition combines printed graphics by Build, with industrial 3D deconstructions by Commonwealth in a series of unique objets d’art. Printed vectors bleed into 3-dimensional surfaces as projected lines etched into the Corian® frames which house them.

Thinify me
Computer Arts - Garrick - 05 Sep 2007 2:47pm

Corel is today releasing Paint Shop Pro Photo X2, a £79 retouching and painting tool with a long heritage on the PC. Last night we were entertained by Corel in London and wowed with some of it's fast, consumer-level image editing options. The best has to be Thinify; if the camera adds 10lbs to your subject, this will take that off again at the click of a button. We tried to get the demo guy to make the photos lool anorexic but he wouldn't play ball...

Holiday!
Computer Arts - Jim - 24 Aug 2007 5:15pm

Crikey. In a rare bout of non-workaholism I'm taking a couple of weeks off, as of next week. So expect quietness on the site; I'm leaving rather Heath-Robinson protocols in place so that the CA team can update the blog and their entries will hopefully appear. Otherwise it'll be back to normal service on 10 September. Cheerio!

PICO
Computer Arts - Jo - 24 Aug 2007 11:04am

PICO or Physical Intervention in Computational Optimization is another one of those clever table interactive table things that seem to be sprouting up all over the place at the moment. The interesting thing about this one is that it features electromagnets that can actually move physical objects placed on the tables surface. Neat

Shelling out for CS3 - an update
Computer Arts - Tom - 16 Aug 2007 10:17am

As an adjunct to our feature in issue 136 on Adobe’s international pricing policy for CS3, here’s a link to a great editorial. In it, the author make one of the most credible points we’ve heard: that the Internet is a sales channel in its own right, which Adobe fails to acknowledge. We’d certainly be interested in your thoughts, and to find out how many of you have dipped into your pockets and shelled-out for CS3. Vote in our poll.

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
