Nefarious Marketing
Computer Arts - Tom - 09 Aug 2007 2:58pm

Don’t you just hate it when a multi-national hardware manufacturer hijacks a cult classic? I’ve just been sent the following link from VIA. It’s to do with the launch of its new micro laptop-thingy, the Nanobook. Well, it sort of is. Instead of just showing what it does, it makes the most inane link to Jack Kerouac’s novel Big Sur, with some British marketing plod spouting all kinds of nonsense linking his new gizmo to Kerouac’s cross-country escapades. You can watch it below. Instead, however, I recommend you head to Amazon and get yourself a copy of On the Road to celebrate fifty years of its publication.

'How much do I charge?"
Computer Arts - Tom - 09 Aug 2007 12:18pm

It's got to be one of the most asked questions that's shouted through CA's hallowed doors. The answer, of course, is hugely subjective. That said, I stumbled across this handy calculator which takes into account all your expenditures and miscellaneous spending to calculate your hourly rate. Handy.

Gimme Friction Baby
Computer Arts - Jim - 09 Aug 2007 11:35am

What ho, chums. I've been busy. Still am, in fact, so bear with me if not a huge amount happens on the site over the next indeterminate time period. It'll be worth the wait. Anyway; here's some lovely laid-back time-wasting fun from jayisgames.com's Casual Gameplay Design Competition. It's a sort of strange Jazz Club Puzzle Bobble thing. Nice.

World's longest graffiti wall
Computer Arts - Tom - 26 Jul 2007 2:24pm

Well, not a wall as such, more of an annoyingly designed site that you have to scroll for what seems like months to enjoy. Still, if you're into your pixel-based tagging, pay a visit and slap something up on the wall.

Everyone loves robots
Computer Arts - Tom - 26 Jul 2007 11:56am

Here’s a great little segment that design firm Stardust has put together for Fuel TV. Doesn’t it remind you of building robot costumes out of cardboard and kitchen implements as a kid... No? Just me? Well, it’s a great spot nonetheless.

Don't fart on my heart...
Computer Arts - Garrick - 23 Jul 2007 3:56pm

Well, the name isn't exactly a turn-on is it? It's the latest song by Ebony Bone, who perform in a 70s punk style, and the video was put together by Tear. The rough and natural effects go perfectly with the fanzine-type feel you would expect from a band with this sound. Check it out.

Computer Arts - Jo - 18 Jul 2007 3:18pm

Want to be a greener web surfer? If like me, you're still running a hideously inefficient CRT you might not have realised that it requires more power for your monitor to display white rather black. Blackle makes your web searches more energy efficient by making google predominantly black.

Rhythm of lines
Computer Arts - Jo - 13 Jul 2007 10:43am

Have you seen that lovely new Audi advert with the mellow, undulating lines and the classical music. Well, you should check out the site that goes with it. Using Papervision, the 3D flash engine everyone is raving about you can create your own wobbly line animations. Have a go, it's fun - especially if you're as hungover as I am.

More creative graduates
Computer Arts - Garrick - 13 Jul 2007 9:56am

On Wednesday we went down to London to check out the New Designers 2007 exhibition. It brings together the work of design graduates from across Britain, meaning we can attend this rather than going to loads of separate degree shows. We saw some fantastic illustration and graphic design work, and there's also plenty of product design and furniture if that takes your fancy. It's on at the Business Design Centre in Islington until Sunday...

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
