Type the sky
Computer Arts - Jim - 11 Jul 2007 12:47pm

These young people today, they'll try and make anything into typography given half the chance. Here, for example, is an entire alphabet made from photographs of the sky, cleverly obscured by buildings. What will they think of next?

Computer Arts - Garrick - 05 Jul 2007 4:12pm

The brand new issue goes on sale today and on the newsstand readers have three different covers to choose from. This week I've been highlighting the collectives who designed our four covers (3 newsstand, 1 subs) and today it's the turn of Via Grafik. These boys from Germany put together a many-headed creature based on themselves for our final cover image. What do you think?

Design source Flickr set
Computer Arts - Jo - 04 Jul 2007 3:14pm

Whilst my Flickr account is populated with pictures of me and my friends getting drunk, AIK1 has put his to much better use. He's created a series of sets of imagery from various schools of art and design and pop culture including Russian constructivist graphic design, film posters and signage.

Let battle commence
Computer Arts - Tom - 04 Jul 2007 3:07pm

Monorex's splendid cover isn't the only thing they've been busy with this month. Oh no, they've organised another Secret Wars tour - kicking off this Saturday (6th July) in Bristol. Anyone who fancies witnessing a street-art battle should head to the Red Rooms on Saturday to see them throw down. Later dates on the tour take in Cardiff, Gloucestershire's Bloom festival and the Isle of Wight.

Kwik E-mart
Computer Arts - Jo - 02 Jul 2007 11:22am

This one of the most audacious bits of marketing we've ever seen. To promote the forthcoming Simpsons movie, a replica of Apu's Kwik E-mart convenience store has been created in Burbank California. Check out the photos here

Bloxorz
Computer Arts - Jim - 29 Jun 2007 2:28pm

I've been having one of those weeks with a to-do list that keeps getting longer. Spending two days on training courses hasn't particularly helped, either. Consequently I doubt I'll have much time for messing around with this bit of Friday fun this afternoon, but that's no reason why I shouldn't pass the fun on to you.

Act on CO2 : Carbon Calculator
Computer Arts - Jo - 29 Jun 2007 12:58pm

Lovely designed site for this handy carbon emissions site. Lots of great advice for 'being a greener designer'. Damn, I wish I'd copyrighted that phrase - that way I wouldn't have crummy, third-rate magazines ripping off my feature ideas.

Hockey crazy designers
Computer Arts - Garrick - 27 Jun 2007 4:17pm

Knowing that I'm from Canada and love ice hockey, Roddy sent me through this link to a design agency who obviously love the sport as well. An interesting bunch of guys who obviously have a sense of humour. Not a bad site either.

New Blood flows
Computer Arts - Garrick - 26 Jun 2007 2:53pm

If you're London-based or in the city today or tomorrow, drob by the Old Billingsgate Market (Monument tube) for the D&AD New Blood exhibition. I was down there yesterday helping choose winners for this event and was very impressed with the range of new talent on show. Excellent stuff and a big up goes out from us here on CA to the graduating design classes of 2007.

Global Cities exhibition
Computer Arts - Jo - 25 Jun 2007 4:58pm

'Global Cities looks at changes in the social and built forms of ten large, dynamic, international cities: Cairo, Istanbul, Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Mumbai, Sao Paulo, Shanghai and Tokyo...' Hmmm, i guess Bath didn't make the list then.

Join Our Gang
Computer Arts - Jim - 22 Jun 2007 4:11pm

We've all gone completely and certifiably Facebook mental round these parts over the past couple of weeks, to the extent that I set up a Computer Arts group this morning. If you want to come and join us then we're fairly easy to find.

Paint a van
Computer Arts - Jim - 20 Jun 2007 12:34pm

I think this is some sort of beer promotional deal, but it's also a great advert for the Papervision 3D engine - paint on a camper van and then see your results in 3D. There may even be some sort of competition involved; it's all in Russian though so your guess is as good as mine. Click on the yellow button to prove you're over 18 and get started.

Devoid of Yesterday
Computer Arts - Jo - 19 Jun 2007 10:20am

Devoid of Yesterday (consisting of directors Rob Chiu of The Ronin and Chris Hewitt of Dstrukt) team up alongside audio designer Ben Boysen (Hecq) for a new short narrative led piece that explores a child's pent up anger and frustration that erupt in a force that marks the end of innocence. Sometimes... things just fall apart.

Ethics
Computer Arts - Garrick - 14 Jun 2007 11:58am

I don't know what brought it on but I was involved in a massive conversation about ethics in design in the pub last night. As you do. So I vented some steam about it on the forum today. Pitch your thoughts with us...

Designer Slash Model
Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Jun 2007 5:08pm

This, Joe points out, is absolutely brilliant. And he's right; it's a like a fantastic cross between a showreel and Zoolander, from the good-looking folks at Digital Kitchen.

The Kopek video
Computer Arts - Garrick - 12 Jun 2007 1:50pm

Here's a good one for your coffee break. Ireland-based animator Eion Duffy has created this video for the band Kopek. It's captivating, artful and quite sad too. Check out the combination of styles and media in his video. Already in the Irish charts, expect it on UK television soon.

Computer Arts - Jim - 08 Jun 2007 4:15pm

New MacBook Pro
Computer Arts - Tom - 05 Jun 2007 3:08pm

As we point out in the new issue (137 hits the shelves on Thursday, ya’ll), it’s a little too easy to get excited about new Apple kit. That said, the new MacBook Pro’s just been announced (like about 40min ago) and this time around it comes packing the latest Intel ‘Santa Rosa’ chipset, a super tweaked graphics card, and a more eco- and designer-friendly) LED-backlit screen. Go forth and salivate.

Copyright and you
Computer Arts - Garrick - 05 Jun 2007 1:17pm

We're continually seeing designers getting ripped off by clients because they haven't taken steps to preserve copyright in their work. Equally, we see a fair few sailing close to the wind by incorporating the work of others into their creations. Do you know your rights when it comes to intellectual property? Vote in our online poll, and leave your comments on our forum. (Log-in to vote...)

Brick Artist

We love LEGO here at CA, but not as much as this guy. Nathan Sawaya creates intricate LEGO sculptures. We particularly like the Han Solo encased in carbonite from The Empire Strikes Back

Fractals - The colours of Infinity
Computer Arts - Jo - 04 Jun 2007 11:35am

If you normally associate Fractal patterns with dodgy market stalls selling drug paraphernalia then you'll learn a lot from this documentary. Presented by Arthur C. Clarke, writer of 2001: A Space Odyssey, it explains some of the mysteries of the Mandelbrot set.

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
