Computer Arts - Jim - 20 Apr 2009 3:12pm

Students on the BA (hons) Design for Moving Image Design and Graphic Design courses at Ravensbourne College have come up with a wizard wheeze to raise funds for their graduation show. They've sent random items out to their favourite designers and illustrator for them to customise in any way they see fit, and then on 30 April they're putting the results up for silent auction at the Vibe Bar on Brick Lane. Drop them a line if you fancy going along as space is limited.

Happy Illustrator's Day!
Computer Arts - Jim - 02 Apr 2009 12:51pm

Hell's teeth! Why did nobody remind me that it's Illustrator's Day today? I totally forgot to send out cards and everything. Oh, hang on; Moodboard just made it up as an excuse to showcase some of their favourite illustrators on their Factory blog. Fair play to them.

Visual Crooks site goes live
Computer Arts - Amy - 20 Mar 2009 2:31pm

The website of the digital media students of Sweden’s renowned Hyper Islands school has just gone live, and it’s definitely worth checking out to get a heads-up on the level of talent emerging from this year’s graduate pool. Working under the moniker Digital Crooks, the 43-strong class put the site together in their spare time, overseeing every element of the project from concept and design to hunting down sponsors. Combining Flash, 3D work, video footage and 2D designs, the interactive site layout depicts a prison, housing students of different specialisms in separate wings that the visitor can explore, with each individual student having designed their own character and cell. For more news on the world’s hottest graduating digital design talent, keep your eye on Computer Arts’ Graduate Showcase updates on this website and in each issue of the magazine.

Google Banksy View
Computer Arts - Jim - 19 Mar 2009 4:54pm

Google Maps' StreetView for the UK went live today, as you're doubtless already well aware. We're struggling to understand why they failed to include Bath but felt it necessary to include Scunthorpe. Anyway, a group of Banksy admirers have taken it upon themselves to track down his work on StreetView, and so far they've done very well. This, contrary to any similar assertion I may have made in the past, is what the internet was made for. Link.
Chrome Experiments
Computer Arts - Jim - 19 Mar 2009 3:45pm

It's amazing what you can do with just a web browser and JavaScript these days. This site, created by the Google Chrome team, showcases experiments that prove you don't need Flash to do impressive things on the web. Naturally it prefers you to be using Chrome with its V8 JavaScript engine, but we've had success trying it with the latest Safari.

Wacom Nextbeat
Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Mar 2009 2:06pm

A little off-topic for Computer Arts? I think not, seeing as (a) it's Wacom, and (b) there's probably a healthy proportion of you that likes to do a bit of DJing, one way or another. So, here's Wacom's upcoming DJ device, the nextbeat, that I've just received an email about. I'm reasonably certain that I want one.

What, No Comic Sans?
Computer Arts - Jim - 11 Mar 2009 12:34pm

Squidspot's Periodic Table of Typefaces is a lovely visualisation of 100 of the most popular, influential and notorious typefaces today. But where's Comic Sans? It's probably the most notorious typeface on the planet.

Kenjiro Harigai
Computer Arts - Jim - 10 Mar 2009 4:32pm

Kenjiro's portfolio is wide and impressive, but I especially love how it's presented. Everything slides past, as if crammed onto a darkened conveyor belt, and individual pieces expand and brighten as you hover the mouse pointer over them. It has other tricks as well; have a play with it and see.

Photoshop on our iPhone
Computer Arts - Tom - 03 Mar 2009 12:35pm

I have seen the future, and it is Photo Keys - an iPhone app which puts Photoshop's tools palette on your iPhone. You can then physically select your tools with the poke of a digit, never having to touch the keyboard again. We haven't tested it yet but will report back on the forum when we've done so.

Maxim Dalton
Computer Arts - Jim - 02 Mar 2009 12:51pm

Aha! That's the 50s-style cartoon illustrator whose name I couldn't remember last week. I knew he was based in Argentina but my Google madskillz failed me on this occasion, and then I stumbled across his site again this morning.

Follow Us!
Computer Arts - Jim - 27 Feb 2009 11:50am

It seems that there's some new site called Twitter that's all about 'micro-blogging' and finding out what Stephen Fry's doing at any given moment. So we've signed up for it to provide you with an ongoing stream of exciting Computer Arts updates, not to mention the opportunity to stalk individual team members. Naturally if you follow us, we'll be sure to follow you back, until it all gets out of hand and we're faced with an enormous backlog of people and the prospect of spending an entire day clicking the Follow button. So get in early, is my advice!

Starck's School of Design
Computer Arts - Amy - 25 Feb 2009 2:30pm

Design-loving reality contest fans rejoice: ‘Philippe Starck’s School of Design’ will be bringing style, creative nouse and a healthy dose of ruthless artistic competition to BBC2 from late March. A twist on the ‘Apprentice’ format, the show pits the design wits of 12 British contestants against one another through the trials of design challenges and sharing a house in Paris’s suburbs. The winner of the series, which was produce by Twofour and wrapped in early December, scoops a six-month contract at Starck’s Paris design agency.

A Simple Pledge
Computer Arts - Jim - 24 Feb 2009 2:33pm

Okay, I couldn't find that other illustrator I was thinking of. Bah. Anyway. Here's an excellent poster from Jeff Matz at Lure Design that'll both brighten up your workspace and make you a better designer. Can't say fairer than that.

Frank Chimero
Computer Arts - Jim - 24 Feb 2009 11:32am

There's a really pleasing revival of 50's-style cartoon illustration going on at the moment - simple shapes and bold but slightly muted colours. There's a lot of it about, and Frank Chimero's contribution just happens to be the one I was looking at when it occurred to me to post something about it. I may have someone else bookmarked, though; if so, they'll appear in a few minutes.

Raven
Computer Arts - Jim - 23 Feb 2009 12:29pm

There are quite a few online bitmap editing apps out there, but Raven's the first decent vector program I've come across. It's no substitute for a copy of Illustrator - at least so far - but it does the basics really rather well and it's just the ticket for creating logos and the like.

School of Animation Re-Launch
Computer Arts - Amy - 20 Feb 2009 2:33pm

The university of the West of England will be getting in the Oscars act next week when it invites Richard Williams, the three-times Oscar-winning animator who worked on ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit?’, to re-launch its animation school. According to the school’s head, Gill Sandford, the school’s new, larger campus will help to secure the status of Bristol – which is already home to the multi-award winning Aardman animations – as the “main animation hub outside London.”

Scintillation
Computer Arts - Jim - 19 Feb 2009 3:53pm

I'm very impressed with what some people are doing with video projection these days, particularly all this clever business with projecting on to unlikely surfaces and taking their shape and topography into account. Here's Xavier Chassaing with a dazzling example.

Goon City
Computer Arts - Jim - 19 Feb 2009 3:18pm

Ryan Allen's pixel art metropolis isn't as densely populated as eBoy's excellent city posters, but it's absolutely huge (and constantly expanding, as you'll discover when you reach the edges) and littered with pop culture references. It also makes really good use of the Google Maps API, enabling you to zoom out and take in huge chunks of it in one go.

KERN - The Game
Computer Arts - Jim - 18 Feb 2009 11:09am

Who says there aren't any games aimed at typographers? KERN - available for the iPhone right now at a bargain price - is all about fitting missing letters into a falling word and avoiding unsightly ligatures. That is, it's a bit like Tetris but with a cunning typographical angle, and I can guarantee that everyone in the Computer Arts office with an iPhone will have downloaded it before the day's out and be locked into a bitter high score competition.

Eley Kishimoto goes East(pak)
Computer Arts - Amy - 05 Feb 2009 3:37pm

The ‘It bag’ concept gets a cool jab this season with print specialist Eley Kishimoto’s frosty new collection for Eastpak. The self-proclaimed ‘surface decorators’ have splashed their zigzag patterns across Eastpak’s classic Padded, Delegate, The One, Floyd, and Getter bags.

Amazing Video Projection
Computer Arts - Jim - 03 Feb 2009 5:14pm

How annoying. I found this last Thursday evening, then wasn't in the office on Friday, and then yesterday it completely slipped my mind. It's a quite brilliant showreel from EasyWeb in France, showing off their video projection trickery with plenty of "How the hell did they do that?" moments.

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
