Banksy Does Paris
Computer Arts - Jim - 04 Sep 2006 10:11am

Bah. I heard about this on Friday afternoon, and now everyone knows about Banksy replacing a load of Paris Hilton CDs with his own version. Here's a flickr photoset of the CD and inlay. The music on the CD's said to be a DJ Danger Mouse mix; anyone heard it?
Bee Dogs
Computer Arts - Jim - 01 Sep 2006 12:20pm

I was only thinking just this morning that what the internet really needs is a site full of photographs of dogs dressed up in bee costumes. Thank heavens that one actually exists, or I'd have had to make one.

Woodsuch
Computer Arts - Jim - 31 Aug 2006 12:24pm

Trapped in the world of advertising or marketing? Woodsuch might be a way in which to reclaim your soul - it's a series of creative experiments for graphic artists, enabling them to use their talents outside the commercial space.

Latex For Fun
Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Aug 2006 4:04pm

No, not that kind of fun, you filthy-minded deviants. This is all about designer toys for poor people, eschewing the expensive vinyl toy route and replacing it with a balloon and a magic marker and getting lots of designers in on the act. Including, naturally, Computer Arts' latest cover star, Jon Burgerman.

Flash! Aah-Aaaaaaaah!
Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Aug 2006 9:54am

The FWA and Adobe are celebrating ten years of Flash with a poll to pick the most influential Flash site in the world, ever. It's down to the last ten - head on over and cast your vote.

Disaster Pieces
Computer Arts - Jim - 29 Aug 2006 12:16pm

Nothing especially disastrous in this portfolio of JUN's work, merely a fair old collection of flyers for Ministry of Sound in Singapore and at least one piece that looks inspired by our old chum, Rukkit Kuanhawate. See if you can spot it!

Guess The Google
Computer Arts - Jim - 25 Aug 2006 1:00pm

Twenty images culled from Google image search, and you have twenty seconds to guess the search term - a bit like Pictionary but without the horror of getting saddled with someone who can't draw to save their life. Link.
Fun With Fluid Dynamics
Computer Arts - Jim - 25 Aug 2006 10:39am

Completely pointless, this, as far as I can tell. Pour in some water, add a few ducks, bung in a bit of magma and watch the fun commence.

The Look And Sound Of Perfect (TM)
Computer Arts - Jim - 25 Aug 2006 10:36am

Yes, that's HD DVD's slogan. I think I'll be sticking with my current DVD setup, which is the Look And Sound Of Perfectly Adequate, Thank You Very Much (TM)

The Evolution of Speech Balloons
Computer Arts - Jim - 24 Aug 2006 12:52pm

The wonderful thing about the internet is the way you can find yourself spending hours learning about stuff you'd never given a second's thought to until you happened upon a page such as this.

Computer Arts - Jim - 24 Aug 2006 12:28pm

Rocktastic rockers Terminal Se7en were so impressed by how hard the latest issue of Computer Arts Projects rocks, they mailed Dom and asked if any readers fancy coming up with some rock-hard designs for them. How can we refuse such a rocking request?

Free Bryce 5
Computer Arts - Jim - 24 Aug 2006 12:07pm

Here's a bit of a bargain - head over to DAZ and you can download a copy of Bryce 5 for absolutely nothing, and I'm damned if I can see any notable strings attached. And as an added bargain, if you set up an ArtZone account you can upgrade to v5.5 for a measly $19.95.

Ron Fedkiw
Computer Arts - Jim - 22 Aug 2006 12:52pm

If computational fluid dynamics are your thing - and if they're not then they really should be - take a look at Ron's page. It's crammed with amazing videos of fluid simulations in actions, and much more besides.

Indexed
Computer Arts - Jim - 21 Aug 2006 5:01pm

I've always suspected that everything in life can be reduced to simple graphs and Venn diagrams. And here's a page that proves I'm utterly correct.

Game Over
Computer Arts - Jim - 21 Aug 2006 11:40am

Classic arcade games recreated through the medium of cakes, insects and random household objects, and stop-motion animation. You know it makes sense.

Trozo
Computer Arts - Jim - 18 Aug 2006 5:12pm

Peruvian-born Eduardo Valdivieso mixes acrylic painting with type and digital media, with striking results. See his work on this rather swish site.

Suspension of Disbelief
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 Aug 2006 11:36am

I have absolutely no idea what's going on here. Great work by VolumeOne, don't you think?

Wandering Star
Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Aug 2006 2:27pm

Not entirely sure who's site this is as all the useful information bits appear to be in something like Korean. But really all you need to do is click the Gallery link for a collection of sweet and sour illustrative work.

Amautalab
Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Aug 2006 12:30pm

A thoroughly absorbing site from a creative studio based in LA, Buenos Aires and Lima, mixing Flash and stop-motion animation as a fun way of showing off its portfolio.

XYZ Imaging
Computer Arts - Jim - 15 Aug 2006 3:14pm

It's been ages since I've seen a decent hologram - obviously the one on my debit card doesn't count. Impressive stuff here - you can even supply them with your own 3D scenes to be made into holograms.

Le Jardin de Miss Clara
Computer Arts - Jim - 15 Aug 2006 2:45pm

After yesterday's Papercut, here's more bizarre use of paper, but this time more in a papier maché style, French to boot, and in a much prettier site than yesterday's basic offering.

The Human Clock
Computer Arts - Jim - 15 Aug 2006 2:40pm

Why tell the time the boring old-fashioned way? The Human Clock has a selection of photos from all over the world for every minute of the day.

Papercut
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Aug 2006 2:56pm

I'm not sure there's a name for this sort of thing; it's not quite origami, but whatever it is, it looks really nice.

Vvvv
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Aug 2006 12:31pm

Who comes up with these names? What we have here is a multipurpose toolkit that seems to be good for creating everything from little multimedia applets to full-size installations. It even has realtime video analysis, and it's free for non-commercial use.

Helvetica - The Movie
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Aug 2006 10:08am

No, really - this is a feature-length documentary, currently in post-production, all about everyone's favourite Swiss typeface. I'm hoping for a sequel based on Comic Sans.

Computer Arts - Jim - 11 Aug 2006 3:42pm

The Sharpest Man-Made Thing
Computer Arts - Jim - 11 Aug 2006 11:56am

Take one ultra-sharp tungsten needle and a field ion microscope, and this is the result. It looks like a giant mutant blackberry to me.

The Visual Dictionary
Computer Arts - Jim - 11 Aug 2006 11:51am

A great idea in the making here - a collection of photographs of words from signage, graffiti, advertising and so on. It's a bit sparse so far with just 2000-odd words online - sign up and add your own!

Oops!
Computer Arts - Jim - 09 Aug 2006 5:19pm

In this year's Graduate Showcase supplement we managed to get the URL for Pete Harrison, he of the delightful cover artwork, a bit wrong. Our sincerest apologies to Pete for any distress this may have caused him; see below for the correct location of his lovely site.

Computer Arts - Jim - 09 Aug 2006 11:05am

The Way of Hope
Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Aug 2006 2:43pm

All the way from Belgium comes this lovely little animated short by Julien Dykmans. And he's even been thoughtful enough to add a making-of piece, chronicling its nine-month development.

Artweaver
Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Aug 2006 11:13am

Ooh, a new freeware paint package to play with. Artweaver appears to have all the usual features you'd expect, plus plugins to enable scripting features and to share images with Project Dogwaffle.

Travis Lampe
Computer Arts - Jim - 04 Aug 2006 3:27pm

Mad illustration work with a hint of the style of 1930s animation to it? Lots of that here. Whatever Travis is on, I'll... actually, I'll pass this time, thanks.

Scribble
Computer Arts - Jim - 04 Aug 2006 2:18pm

Join the dots, against the clock. If this isn't what Friday afternoons were made for then there's something very, very wrong with this reality.

Torch Art

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
