Mojizu
Computer Arts - Jim - 25 May 2006 2:45pm

How to earn an instant ban from our forum - sign up and then spam us with a bunch of messages about your new character design community. Even if it's actually quite a good destination for budding Burgermans. Harsh but fair, that's me.

Tasteful MySpace
Computer Arts - Jim - 24 May 2006 5:00pm

MySpace, I'm told, is really popular amongst the teen-agers despite (or maybe because of) the fact that the average MySpace page is the design equivalent of having your head kicked in by Sigue Sigue Sputnik, in full costume and performing Love Missile F1-11 at maximum volume. Here's how to hack yourMySpace page into something less offensive.
Magnum in Motion
Computer Arts - Jim - 24 May 2006 4:39pm

Not a hint of Tom Selleck to be seen; rather this is a collection of 'interactive essays' using imagery taken from the Magnum photo library.

Infernoptix
Computer Arts - Jim - 22 May 2006 4:52pm

Best. Display. Ever. I'm not convinced that this would make a particularly sensible replacement for my work monitor, but damn it, I want one anyway. And possibly a welding mask.

Whitney Music Box
Computer Arts - Jim - 22 May 2006 12:41pm

Amazing what you can do if you hook up one of John Whitney's particle systems to a tone generator, isn't it? The end result's a bit like Stockhausen having a fight with a kaleidoscope.

Chronon
Computer Arts - Jim - 22 May 2006 11:43am

Eyezmaze - mad Japanese creators of the ever-lovely Grow games - have come up with a new offering. It seems to involve time travel and the serendipitous clicking of random objects and it has me thoroughly baffled. But in a good way.

Pawel Nolbert
Computer Arts - Jim - 19 May 2006 5:17pm

Here's a decent last-minute find for a Friday afternoon - a very pleasant little portfolio wrapped up in a rather cool Flash front end. Well worth perusing.

Learn to Animate with John K.
Computer Arts - Jim - 18 May 2006 12:03pm

Want to learn animation with one of the latter-day masters, John Kricfalusi? Seems to me like one of the better offers available online right now.

We Feel Fine
Computer Arts - Jim - 18 May 2006 11:56am

Or, "We Feel Fint," which is what it looks like it says on the front page. I'm rather jealous as I don't think I've ever felt fint. But anyway, another great blogosphere-scraping applet that shows you just how everyone's feeling at the moment. Right now 128,155 people are feeling better. Good for them!

Tyger
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 May 2006 3:46pm

Ooh. This is a stunning little film, using Blake's The Tyger as a starting point and mixing up puppetry and motion graphics to create something really rather special. Excellent work by Guilherme Marcondes.

Tighten Up the Graphics
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 May 2006 11:28am

If you ever get bored working in design, how about an exciting career testing and designing video games? It's literally just like this! Link
Flickr Goes Gamma
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 May 2006 11:16am

We're all used to alpha and beta versions, but I don't recall ever seeing a gamma version of anything before. Obviously Flickr doesn't think it's quite up to Release Candidate yet. Anyway, new and improved Flickr, although the layouts and navigation seem as eccentric as ever.

Google Notebook
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 May 2006 11:13am

Don't bother remembering things or writing down notes! Cut and paste it all into your Google Notebook - your own online, well, notebook, that you can access anywhere. Google account required, obviously, which means I'll just have to rely on my memory and bookmarks and Notepad and scaps of paper and stuff.

Don't worry about the 'on Rails' bit just yet - if you want to be 'in' with the achingly hip Web2.0 crowd, get yourself acquainted with Ruby thanks to this excellent online tutorial.

Transform Selector
Computer Arts - Jim - 15 May 2006 4:14pm

Super-cool new plug-in for the Illustrator CS2, in ease of integration and workflow enhancement with the Application Intelligence advancement to new power and added control result that is to never look at Illustrator again the same way. Yeah!

Swansea North Residents Association
Computer Arts - Jim - 12 May 2006 11:32am

Poor residents of Swansea North - evil commercial-makers ruined their streets by flinging a load of fruit down them and not clearing up afterwards. Something about all this doesn't seem quite right, though...

Causes of Color
Computer Arts - Jim - 11 May 2006 11:41am

Here's something to ponder while you're sweating over a Pantone swatch: what actually causes colour? Apparently all colours originate from just fifteen fundamental physical causes. Find out more here.

Pendulumeca
Computer Arts - Jim - 10 May 2006 2:47pm

It's far too nice out to sit around in front of a computer. But assuming you don't have any choice in the matter, here's something to make it more bearable - a really simple but challenging bit of gaming. Me, I'll be busy uploading a new Gallery.

A Swarm of Angels
Computer Arts - Jim - 09 May 2006 4:37pm

I like the sound of this - a scheme to fund, make and distribute a £1 million film online. And my fave musical raves, The Kleptones, have signed on as soundtrack producers. Who's in for £25?

Flood Maps
Computer Arts - Jim - 09 May 2006 10:55am

Are you going to have to swim to work once the polar ice caps melt? Find out with this Google Maps hack, which uses NASA elevation data to calculate what'll end up underwater if sea levels rise.

Anyone for Croquet?
Computer Arts - Jim - 09 May 2006 10:55am

It's been a long time since Neal Stephenson wrote Snow Crash and we still don't have a Metaverse to wander around in. Second Life's one contender; here's another. Croquet's billed as an open source OS with a 3D interface and peer-to-peer networking; essentially a 3D world you can wander round and collaborate in.

Excel Art
Computer Arts - Jim - 08 May 2006 5:14pm

Art? Using Excel? A spreadsheet? Madness. But considering that there are some brave souls out there who are capable of creating acceptable artwork using the dreadful MS Paint, perhaps this isn't such a great surprise.

mn8
Computer Arts - Jim - 08 May 2006 12:15pm

Jake Sargeant's portfolio site features a showreel plus examples of his motion, print and photographic work, plus more besides and all wrapped up in a really nice Flash front end.

Robotic Action Painter
Computer Arts - Jim - 08 May 2006 12:13pm

RAP is described by its creator, Leonel Moura, as an autonomous robot that uses AI algorithms to create its own paintings, decide when they're finished and then sign them. Clever stuff, although the results look more to me like the work of a Logo turtle (remember them?) gone mad than anything Jackson Pollock would put his name to.

Digit Al
Computer Arts - Jim - 05 May 2006 4:22pm

Haven't switched over to digital telly yet? Prepare to spend the next seven years being persuaded to do so by Digit Al, the Matt Lucas-voiced robotic star of a £200 million campaign to help us all get switched from analogue. Digit Al. £200 million. My inner Luddite is stirring.

Cubrius
Computer Arts - Jim - 05 May 2006 2:37pm

This is doing my head in, somewhat, so I thought I'd spread the love. It's a nicely-done puzzler with shades of Soko-Ban and a tendency to become really hard really quickly. That's your afternoon sorted.

Eboy NYC
Computer Arts - Jim - 04 May 2006 5:12pm

Eboy have been giving another city their special kind of treatment - this time it's the Big Apple getting a pixel makeover. Check it out, and buy the poster if you like what you see.

Street Wars
Computer Arts - Jim - 04 May 2006 11:50am

Think you've got what it takes to be an assassin? It's events like this that really make me wish that I lived in London. Perhaps they'll do one in Bath some time...

The Sultan's Elephant
Computer Arts - Jim - 04 May 2006 10:21am

Keep an eye out for a forty-foot elephant if you're around central London over the next four days.

Kollabor8
Computer Arts - Jim - 03 May 2006 4:03pm

Collaboration taken to its logical extreme - either add to an existing chain of pictures by doing your own thing to the last picture in the chain, or post a new image and watch as it gets mutated out of all recognition.

NFCTD
Computer Arts - Jim - 03 May 2006 12:52pm

Another of those oh-so-strange sites where you, like, click stuff and strange stuff happens, man. All very peculiar and rather pretty in a monochromatic Terry Gilliam kind of way.

Propaganda
Computer Arts - Jim - 03 May 2006 12:43pm

Adobe Live's fast approaching, and here's your chance to spread the word and maybe get yourself noticed at the same time. Head this way and use the nest little stripped down interface to create your own piece of Adobe Live propaganda.

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
