Vandal Squad
Computer Arts - Jim - 22 Mar 2006 4:19pm

Flash-powered online graffiti for the masses - make your mark without going to the trouble of breaking into railway sidings, getting paint all over your hands or being arrested.

The Wand
Computer Arts - Jim - 22 Mar 2006 12:38pm

A great animation from Nick Worthey about a guy who acquires a magic wand and does what we'd all do in the same situation. Watch out for the neat little twist at the end. Link.
Vista Delayed
Computer Arts - Tom - 22 Mar 2006 10:56am

Microsoft has announced yet another delay to Vista. This time to fix security in the new operating system. The corporate version will now be out in November, while the home version will be out in January 2007. Interesting, this means it'll be coming out at roughly the same time as OS X 10.5 Leopard. So we'll be able to compare the two approaches side by side when they arrive.

The Art of Motion
Computer Arts - Jim - 21 Mar 2006 4:23pm

Stop-motion, that is - watch this and you'll believe a man can fly, amongst other things.

How to build an Airbus A380 in about seven minutes
Computer Arts - Jim - 21 Mar 2006 10:33am

Easy - just cheat and use lots of time-lapse photography, which is how they do it in this short film from Airbus. It's like a miniature Koyaanisqatsi about a big aeroplane with slightly naff music. Link.
Yutaka Loves London
Computer Arts - Jim - 20 Mar 2006 5:15pm

Yeah! Go London, super fun happy time! Go go go Hoxton Square, cockneys! I can't help feeling that this is some kind of viral for Virgin Atlantic, though. I bet Yutaka's really Richard Branson in disguise.

Snakes on a Plane
Computer Arts - Jim - 20 Mar 2006 3:17pm

If this isn't the number one blockbuster of the year then, well, I won't really be that surprised. But you have to love a film that's about Samuel L. Jackson battling snakes. On a plane. He only signed up for it because of the name.

Something for the weekend?
Computer Arts - Tom - 17 Mar 2006 3:29pm

Jon Burgerman will be painting live in Plank in Nottingham tomorrow. Plank is a clothing store on Heathcoat street and they promise cake will be provided while you watch Jon work, which sells it to us. Jon Burgerman is a UK-based artist famous for his animation, character art and illustration.

Sundown
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 Mar 2006 12:26pm

Lordy - another treat from Ninja Tune following on the True School video. This video's from Daedalus and looks excellently steampunk.

Cooler than Cool
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 Mar 2006 12:14pm

Coldcut's Sound Mirrors is one of my favourite albums of the year so far, so it's quite pleasing to have a link to the video for True Skool, a catchy-as-hell singalong with Roots Manuva, drop into my inbox. Great motion graphics work to go with a top tune.

No newsletter tonight
Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Mar 2006 4:29pm

An advance warning for all you newsletter subscribers - there won't be a newsletter going out tonight. The server that runs the whole show is undergoing some sort of maintenance that involves bits of it being sent to Epsom. Of course, I didn't find out about it until I'd written the newsletter and tried to log into a server that isn't there. Tsk. Still, on the plus side it means I won't come in to an inbox full of bounces and out-of-office autoreplies in the morning. Swings and roundabouts, eh?
A for Alan
Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Mar 2006 10:27am

Woo! V for Vendetta's nearly out! And what does Jonathan Ross know, anyway? Or this Alan Moore bloke being interviewed here? It's going to be GREAT! Yeah!
Web 2.0 or Star Wars?
Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Mar 2006 10:25am

Can you differentiate between the daft names of Web 2.0 apps and the daft names found in Star Wars? Strangely, I can, despite only a cursory interest in both subjects.

Happy happy happy! Joy joy joy!
Computer Arts - Jim - 15 Mar 2006 12:44pm

Animation genius John Kricfalusi donated his Spumco archives to the Animation Archive last year, and while there's a lot to sort through, the Archive has just come up with this - John K's storyboards for 'Stimpy's Invention'. This is how the professionals do it.
isolatr
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Mar 2006 4:13pm

Anti-social networking - it's the next big thing.

The Apple Product Cycle
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Mar 2006 11:06am

This would be funny if not for the fact that it's so true it isn't funny. Which, in all, powers it through the funniness event horizon and leaves me confused as to whether I should laugh or not.

How to Stop Time
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Mar 2006 11:02am

Up yours, Einstein. How come I keep finding this sort of stuff when I'm at work? Come the weekend, when being able to stop time might be useful, I'll have forgotten all about it. Gah.
Newniversal Everything
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Mar 2006 10:47am

You can't beat a site update from Universal Everything as a way of brightening up a damp Tuesday morning. Those MTV idents are a great way to slam your brain into gear, too.

flOw
Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Mar 2006 1:05pm

A simple game of swimming around, eating things and evolution from the brains behind the Cloud game that I mentioned a while back. Gentle, ambient stuff with a predatory edge.

The Kleptones
Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Mar 2006 10:52am

Bit of a musical interlude for you here; my very favourite remix/mash-up artists are leading up to a new album-mix-type-thing, 24 Hours, with a series of EPs. You missed the first one but the second is up now. And while you're there, be sure to grab A Night at the Hip-Hopera and Yoshimi Battles the Hip-Hop Robots. Works of extreme aceness, both of 'em.

Google Mars
Computer Arts - Jim - 13 Mar 2006 10:36am

First Earth, then the moon, and now Google is setting its sights on the Red Planet. Great fun to explore, and Google is looking into the possibility of making it into an add-on for Google Earth.

Public pole dancing
Computer Arts - Tom - 10 Mar 2006 4:01pm

Stringfellows in Paris has started an innovative advertising campaign for its strip clubs. A series of posters have been put up on lampposts that cleverly blend the pole into the post itself. Click on the link for a closer look (all in the name of art of course).

Alan Moore interview
Computer Arts - Tom - 10 Mar 2006 3:54pm

Don't worry if you missed out on Alan Moore's interview on The Culture Show about V For Vendetta. Some thoughtful soul has uploaded it to YouTube.

Parasite
Computer Arts - Jim - 10 Mar 2006 3:02pm

Hurrah for imaginative art terrorism! Bloke confuses commuters by projecting video into the subway from a suitcase stuck to the outside of the train. I'm not sure I'd want a projector and Mac Mini at the mercy of a pair of suction pads, though. Link.
Nest of Totems
Computer Arts - Jim - 10 Mar 2006 11:49am

Hone your mousing skills with this daft piece of Friday tomfoolery. All you have to do is touch as many Easter Island head things with your pointer as possible. Easy.

Your Normal Day
Computer Arts - Jim - 10 Mar 2006 11:48am

A nice simple concept at work here: people around the world take a photo every hour they're awake, then submit the photos and comments so that you can confirm that nagging suspicion that everyone in the world lives a much more interesting life than you.

Nyctalopia
Computer Arts - Jim - 09 Mar 2006 12:25pm

A great alternative to your average portfolio site here - Philippe Loy's Nyctalopia takes you through his work in the form of a set of puzzles.

Imaginary Places
Computer Arts - Jim - 09 Mar 2006 11:42am

An absolutely enormous selection of Flash and more from someone who's clearly decided that his mission in life is to make the most truly messed-up hallucinatory stuff possible. Naturally this makes for a lot of essential viewing.

ColorZilla
Computer Arts - Jim - 08 Mar 2006 4:51pm

Nick attractive palettes off the web with ease, thanks to this cool plugin for Firefox and Mozilla. Just click the Colorzilla icon in the corner, then click on the colour you like the look of. You can even adjust it before copying it out as hex or RGB values.

SpokePOV
Computer Arts - Jim - 08 Mar 2006 3:45pm

A (relatively) easy-to-build piece of kit that turns your bicycle wheel into an LED display. I'd love one of these if I had any practical electronics abilities. Or a bicycle to fit it to. Or the desire to ride a bicycle.

SpermCube
Computer Arts - Jim - 08 Mar 2006 3:45pm

Either this is an extremely French hoax, or it really is a collaborative art project that we can all participate in. All of us except for the ladies, of course.

Tavo Ponce
Computer Arts - Jim - 08 Mar 2006 12:12pm

A great variety of work from this Madrid-based designer showcased here. Obviously the fact he's called Tavo Ponce drew me to his site, but I wouldn't have mentioned it if it wasn't good. So don't think you can get a free mention just by changing your name to Monty Poptart.

When nature calls
Computer Arts - Tom - 08 Mar 2006 11:26am

If all art imitates nature, why not skip the middleman and go direct to the source? That’s what Professor Eshel Ben-Jacob of Tel Aviv University has done, by growing a series of stunning fractal images in a Petri dish. The stunning patterns have been cultivated from colonies of tens of billions of micro-organisms. It’s not all without artistic license however; the images have been colourised and shaded by hand. The research itself has a serious side, as we try to stay ahead of these diseases caused by bacteria. But the artwork is stunning to look at and, as Professor Eshel points out, it reminds us to “never underestimate our opponent”. Take a look at the images here or read about the development process here.
Want some wallpaper?
Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Mar 2006 12:11pm

You know Catalina Estrada's lovely artwork from the latest issue of Computer Arts? Wouldn't you just love it adorning your desktop? Of course you would. So we've gone and made some proper desktop wallpaper for you. Help yourself!
New kid on the blog
Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Mar 2006 12:07pm

As you'll notice from the post just below, there's a new guy in town. Mark Hattersley's our new Reviews Editor, he's also going to be in charge of news, and we've strong-armed him into providing content for the site. So you'll be seeing more than a long parade of me in the blog panel from now on. Hurrah!

Obviously unhappy with 3Dconnexion stealing its ‘wacky Photoshop design tool’ crown with the SpacePilot, Logitech has struck back with the NuLooq navigator. It's described as a 'circular billet' with various buttons and twisting navrings enabling you to select common tools, adjust values, zoom and navigate around an image – all at the squeeze of a wrist. I AM 8 BIT
Computer Arts - Jim - 06 Mar 2006 3:31pm

I really should have mentioned this ongoing art project, inspired by the good old days when video games were proper video games, ages ago. But you know how it is.

Spunk United
Computer Arts - Jim - 06 Mar 2006 3:30pm

The great thing about writing these things up is that I can mention this Singapore-based online artzine without giving the slightest hint of the enormous smirk contorting my face. Ah. Drat.

Park Studio
Computer Arts - Jim - 03 Mar 2006 3:49pm

Either there's something very weird going on with this site, or my screen's just melted.

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
