It's available for a limited period only, so get downloading fast, and Marck asks that you send him a sample of anything you make using his vectors. Sounds like a fair deal. http://www.neuralbrand.org/ |
The Obakemono Project Computer Arts - Jim - 08 Feb 2006 11:49am A gaijin's guide to the fantastic folk monsters of Japan, Obakemono indexes the many weird and wonderful creatures of Japanese folklore and superstition. Useful if you plan on visiting, or just want some artistic inspiration. http://www.obakemono.com/
Sketch Swap Computer Arts - Jim - 08 Feb 2006 11:21am Yet another sketch site - this one's cunning twist is that you do a sketch, submit it and then get someone else's sketch in return. I did quite a good cartoon face and got a rubbish teddy bear thing back. Swings and roundabouts. http://www.sketchswap.com/
Come Clean Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Feb 2006 12:42pm An animated take on the grouphug-style confessional site. Submit your own confession or just watch other people's, either on the site or as a downloadable streaming screensaver. http://www.comeclean.com/
Symbols.com Computer Arts - Jim - 07 Feb 2006 11:59am An online encyclopaedia of 2,500 Western signs and their meanings. I just discovered that that Jesus fish you see on the backs of cars is also used by lawyers to signify that a case is closed. Amazing. http://www.symbols.com/
Help yourself! Computer Arts - Jim - 06 Feb 2006 5:24pm As of today, we've decided to make our tutorial content free for everyone to download. Why? Because we love you. So ignore all those pesky 'PREMIUM' flashes (I'm getting rid of them, but there are a lot to do) and gorge yourself on free tutorial goodness. http://www.computerarts.co.uk/tutorials
V for Vendetta Super Bowl Trailer Computer Arts - Jim - 06 Feb 2006 10:41am Being a lover of the comic and naturally suspicious of attempts to bring Alan Moore's stuff to the big screen, I've been trying not to get too excited about V. Except the trailers keep getting the better of me. And now they show this during the Super Bowl. Love it.
Rally Trophy Computer Arts - Jim - 03 Feb 2006 12:04pm Scalextric-like larks to ease you into the weekend - build a track and then race either the computer or a friend. I'd recommend getting a friend, because the computer player's utter rubbish. http://rally.jowood.com/rally.html
Raku-Gaki Computer Arts - Jim - 03 Feb 2006 11:41am A quite brilliantly obtuse bit of web design here - there's at least as much fun to be had working out how to navigate the site as there is to be had from the content. Something to keep you going while I seek out a nice piece of Friday frippery. http://raku-gaki.com/
Los Angeles Let's Be Friends Computer Arts - Jim - 02 Feb 2006 2:34pm Inspired by Jeff Soto's work, this short from Three Legged Legs sees friendly monsters trying to spread joy and beauty throughout Los Angeles. Bless them and their well-meaning naiveté. http://threeleggedlegs.com/view/?what=laletsbefriends
NextEngine Computer Arts - Jim - 02 Feb 2006 12:46pm This looks like a bit of a bargain - a desktop 3D scanner for a shade under $2,500. I'm tempted, but then again I bought a cheap flatbed a year or two ago and I've used it about three times, ever. So I probably won't bother. http://www.nextengine.com
Brokeback to the Future Computer Arts - Jim - 02 Feb 2006 11:49am Ever since that brilliant Shining trailer mash-up that I blogged ages ago, everyone's been jumping on the bandwagon. Usually turning feelgood movies into horror films with uninspired results. This one's fun, though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfODSPIYwpQ
QuarkXPress 7 made easy Computer Arts - Jim - 01 Feb 2006 12:11pm Word reaches us of a new Quark promotion - get QuarkXPress 6.5 now, and you'll be able to upgrade to version 7 when it's released for a paltry £49. How's that for a bargain? http://euro.quark.com/en/sales/desktop
VisualData Computer Arts - Jim - 01 Feb 2006 11:28am A huge repository of Ronald Wisse's digital artwork, from interactive pieces to static illustrations and motion graphics work. A great place to kill quite a bit of time. http://www.visualdata.org/
SeaMonkey Computer Arts - Jim - 01 Feb 2006 11:28am For all my Firefox evangelism, I've actually held off installing it at home because I prefer the integrated nature of the Mozilla suite and I can't be doing with maintaining a separate browser and mail client. So I'll be checking out SeaMonkey when I get home - it's essentially Mozilla with a shiny redesign and new features. http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/
Grass Collective Computer Arts - Jim - 31 Jan 2006 12:25pm Starting from the idea that wall-mounted plasma and LCD TVs can be used as picture frames, Grass Collective sells DVDs of motion artwork. Two DVDs are out now, with another on the way and high quality Quicktime 7 samples available for free download. http://grasscollective.com/

Shiira Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Jan 2006 2:08pm There's a new browser for Macs in town - Shiira plans to become better and more useful than Safari. I thought Firefox already did that, but some people just won't be told. http://hmdt-web.net/shiira/en
Demonic Tots and Disturbing Cuisine Computer Arts - Jim - 30 Jan 2006 10:52am Start your week the unsettling way, with a gallery of mid-20th-century advertising that starts off with a succession of ghastly Midwych Cuckoo infants and segues into glisteningly unreal food imagery. Shudderific! http://www.plan59.com/scarykids.htm
Friday frivolity Computer Arts - Jim - 27 Jan 2006 11:34am Up for a bit of end-of-the-week slacking? Not me. I take my work extremely seriously. But if I were in the mood for some pre-weekend amusement, this would do the trick nicely. It's called Turbo Tanks and it's a simple one-on-one tank battle in stark vector graphics. Have fun! http://www.turbotanks.com/
Strange sparkly twinkly thing Computer Arts - Jim - 27 Jan 2006 11:33am My Japanese is a bit rusty so I'm not sure what this is called; however it's a diverting audiovisual toy that's a little reminiscent of Toshio Iwai's Electroplankton for the Nintendo DS. Move the mouse to make noises and affect the display in assorted ways, and click the mouse to cycle effects; there are about 73 of them. http://www2u.biglobe.ne.jp/~macopism/noct/data/
The Unseen Video Computer Arts - Jim - 27 Jan 2006 11:33am A finalist in the FlashForward 2006 motion graphics category, this system-intensive Flash video for You Make Me Feel by Mike Milosh looks different according to your local time and weather data from your nearest weather centre. http://www.theunseenvideo.com/
| It's a small world after all Computer Arts - Jim - 26 Jan 2006 11:29am Check out Olivo Barbieri's peculiar brand of aerial photography. | Group Shot Computer Arts - Jim - 23 Jan 2006 12:53pm An intriguing little application from Microsoft Research, borne from the irrefutable fact that no single photo out of a series of group shots will ever be perfect. So instead, feed the lot of them into Group Shot and create a perfect composite. http://research.microsoft.com/projects/GroupShot/ |
distellamap Computer Arts - Jim - 19 Jan 2006 4:17pm I'm reasonably sure I haven't blogged this one before, however I'm subjecting myself to controlled nicotine withdrawal at the moment so it's entirely possible I did it a couple of days ago and it's totally slipped my befuddled mind. Er, yeah. Videogames become art in an extremely old-school kind of way. Almost makes me wish I'd learned assembler. http://benfry.com/distellamap/
| Vektorika magazine Computer Arts - Jim - 19 Jan 2006 12:33pm Like vectors? You'll like this e-zine, then - it's dedicated to vector graphics and it's currently after submissions for its next issue, the theme being "LOVE". | The Batgirl Meme Computer Arts - Jim - 16 Jan 2006 2:29pm For no good reason, loads of LiveJournal users decided to draw pictures of Batgirl last week and post them in their blogs. Which is at least preferable to the usual LJ staple of a load of teenage girls taking photos of themselves in mirrors. http://www.livejournal.com/users/qcjeph/44084.html |

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!
Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.
Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com
Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
