Computer Arts - Jo - 23 Jan 2008 10:34am

We're big fans of typographic puns here in the CA office and so we had a bit of a chuckle when we heard about YouWorkForThem's new font, Black Slabbath. Described as 'The heaviest typeface in the world' is an awesomely chunky slab-serif and is available now for $38.95

The Decapitator
Computer Arts - Jo - 18 Jan 2008 10:48am

"Call the police, there's a madman around." Well, not really, but someone is going around cutting off the heads of characters in billboards and adverts around London. A brilliant bit of stick-up graffiti and a refreshing change to all the Banksy-aping stencillism which is all too common nowadays

MacBook Air
Computer Arts - Jo - 18 Jan 2008 10:42am

Yeah, we know it's old news, but just in case you've been in a coma for the past week, here it is again. Apple this week unveiled the MacBook Air. Apple claim the machine is 'The world's thinnest notebook'. It's basically an emaciated aluminium version of the regular Macbook, featuring the same 13.3 inch screen, but minus an optical drive. We're admittedly dubious at the moment, but we'll wait until we see one in the flesh to pass comment

What's a graffle? A graffiti raffle of course. And while that may sound like a bad cracker joke, it's actually a real event, taking place in Bristol. Enter the graffle and you could be the proud owner of an original Jamie Reid, Mr Jago or even a Banksy.

Move as though you've drunk a crate of the stuff though, as the deadline is 31 December 2007...

AKQA's Festive Rodents
Computer Arts - Jim - 17 Dec 2007 12:07pm

AKQA are celebrating Christmas by getting a pair of gerbils to power a cheerful neon Yuletide message to one and all. That's the theory, anyway; so far all I've seen is a pair of gerbils mostly hiding.

How to do ugly
Computer Arts - Tom - 16 Nov 2007 11:15am

Notable design journo Michael Bierut has written a great article on ugly design. He contends that there's a difference between rule breaking and plain darn bad design, citing the likes of SuperSuper magazine as looking like 'a clown being sick'. Funny and interesting at once.

VectorMagic
Computer Arts - Jim - 14 Nov 2007 2:53pm

There's nothing especially new about programs that covert bitmaps into vectors, but this online offering is quite astonishingly good. It's quick, easy to use and the results are very impressive. Have a go on it now before the rest of the internet finds it and the server grinds to a halt.

ON THE UP

Quicktime 7
QuickTime updates don’t usually get us that excited. But the inclusion of the H.264 codec in QuickTime 7 has us drooling as it’s the one the PSP uses for movies. Stick your showreel on a big memory card and put it on a PSP – that’s progress!

Canon EOS 350D
Canon’s pro-am SLR gets even better, now with an 8 megapixel sensor and new features previously only found on much more expensive models, including three focus modes, monochrome mode and faster memory card writing.

ON THE SLIDE

Annoying Apple
Jobs and co have sparked ire for getting heavy-handed with a student who put the latest OSX update online, so much so that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out and offered him $1,000 towards his defence.
Drunkenblog.com

Loonatics
“Hey, let’s take the Looney Toons characters and re-imagine them as angular, edgy superhero types in the year 2772 for today’s teen demographic!” No, really, we’re sure it’ll be at least as wonderful as Scrappy Doo.
