PictureMate 500

The PictureMate is more holiday companion than work colleague

Since portable photo printers first appeared, there has been much progress in the inkjet market. Prices have fallen while quality has risen, and even combined photo printers and scanners now boast excellent photo quality. So, Epson has updated its portable photo printer, and the result is the PictureMate 500.

This photo printer is simpler to use than its numberless predecessor. Crucially, too, there is an optional rechargeable battery – something that was missing from the original printer. This is important because rival HP has offered battery-powered units for some time. Epson’s PictureMate 500 is up against the screenless Photosmart 335, available for £55.

Connectivity is plentiful, though don’t expect as many options straight from the box; you’ll need your own USB cable for connection to a Mac or PC, while Bluetooth connectivity requires an add-on. Most popular types of memory card can be inserted into this printer, which can also act as a card reader for your PC. As you’d expect, there is direct camera printing (PictBridge) if you want it.

The colour interface is really easy to use – once you get over the fact the screen seems rather small. It measures 2.4-inches, though, so it’s bigger than that on many digital cameras. Print quality is excellent, but skintones are a little weak. Prints also come at a price; you’ll need to buy a Print Pack for £29, which includes 100 sheets of paper, plus ink.

This printer is very much a hobby horse. You might have a particular work-related use for it, but the likelihood is you’ll be printing out the results of your summer holiday instead.
