May 2010 (#174)

Be a better illustrator - the latest issue, on sale now

Illustration is back. And in a big way, as industry expert and illustration advocate Lawrence Zeegen discusses in our feature, this month. As the author states, "once positioned in the no-man's land between graphic design and fine art, dodging scuds and shells from both sides, illustration is now a discipline heroically standing its own ground." So we thought it only right to celebrate this.

As well as Lawrence's in-depth feature - which sees him talking to such illustration young guns as James Dawe, the Nobrow Press team and Kyle Bean - we also visit Canada to check out the studio of influential illustrator Gary Taxali. Finally, make sure you check out Fat Punk Studio's excellent Illustrator tutorial, showing you how to create a fantastic interlocking motif.

Elsewhere this issue, we start a new series looking at the details involved in starting your own design business. This first part deals with the finances - how much you need and where you should get it from. Also, we profile Japan's hottest creative talent, visit Australian agency Qube Konstrukt and bring you the details on how Radim Malinic rebranded the London Film Museum.

Finally, check out our first Graduate Showcase 2010 announcement.

Have a good month.
