Animating a logo with After Effects

Animating a logo with After Effects

In the third part of our series of tutorials on cross-media design, Haley Saner brings a static logo to life with a sparkling range of special effects. The series concludes next month with designing for mobile.

As an animator and motion designer, I often get clients giving me static logos and expecting me to supply an effective logo build/animation for broadcast very quickly. This tutorial will show you how to meet the demands of such a brief.

The concept behind this logo build was quite simple: insert the Yellow Snowboards logo that Go Media created earlier in this series into a snowy winter scene. A few ideas stuck out when I thought about this project. I wanted the scene to be very cold and to feel almost ice-like. I wanted to include mountains, falling snow and a reflection of the logo on the icy ground. I also planned to animate the logo into frame by using solid lines to create the formation of the Ls and W in the word 'Yellow'.
