Bring your themes to life in type

Bring your themes to life in type

blindSALIDA shows you how to reflect your image' inspiration through type, using Illustrator to generate a blown-about lettering effect for a song title.

I love typography and music, so I recently mixed both in a poster series in which typography illustrates a song title.

Two examples from this series include Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun and The Stooges' I Wanna Be Your Dog. In these posters, the letters forming the song titles become an integral part of the image.

For this tutorial, I've chosen to create a poster for Wild Is The Wind, a beautiful song written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington for the 1957 film of the same name. It was sung by Johnny Mathis and nominated for an Academy Award, and has since been covered by a number of artists, among them David Bowie and the late, great Nina Simone. The typographical effect we'll create will reflect the title; we'll make it look like the letters are being blown by the wind. Let's begin the process.
