Create an 80s punk rock music video

Use After Effects to key your greenscreen footage, then stylise it to look like it’s straight out of an 80s punk zine

Music videos are a great outlet for creative expression. With millions of musicians all over the world using the internet to promote themselves, it’s easy to find a band to work with. That said, most music videos never have the budget for elaborate shoots or big effects, but After Effects has a plethora of tools for chromakeying greenscreen footage. Simply capture some digital video of the band you’re working with and bring it into AE for an 80s DIY punk makeover. Add layers of scrappy print effects, then deface your footage to give it an authentic punk fanzine look.

This tutorial shows you a quick and easy way to key your video footage using sloppy masks and The Foundry’s Keylight plug-in, which integrates with After Effects 7 or later. Then you can use a series of solids and video layers with stock effects and blending modes to create colours and gradients. Finally, use one of Pete Warden’s free plug-ins to transform your video into photocopied halftone patterns.
