Type in motion

Clusta Design Consultancy shows how type can be used to add meaning to a short Flash video

The following tutorial explains how we went about combining text, imagery, graphics and video footage to produce this short for Create-Online magazine. The video was used as the intro to the magazine’s covermounted CD-ROM.

The theme of the video was ‘usability’, and we wanted to communicate this idea with fast and furious graphics, using words that we come into contact with every day while using computers. The video employs techniques that we use in almost all of our video production work. As a web design company, using Flash for video work seemed like an obvious solution, and this tutorial demonstrates the versatility of Flash as a tool for producing video - 80 per cent of this piece was produced in Flash and then exported to After Effects to piece together with the music.

Typography is an important part of all our work, especially video production. This tutorial explains why we’ve used typography in this way and how we went about animating text for video production.
