Revive old images with new masks

Revive old images with new masks

Josè Oliveira demonstrates how to breathe new life into your library of old works with some simple but effective masking techniques.

Using simple masks to create complex images is both visually effective and efficient.

It's an approach that I used to create the cover for this very magazine's Photoshop issue (issue 161, May 2009) which has attracted a lot of questions about how the final result was reached.

In this tutorial, I'll show you what is a powerful and very useful method to recycle and remix any kind of image, including a 3D render of your past works. By using a single image, you'll be able to create a large range of different and unexpected outcomes. One example of this method is my illustration 'El Robot Atomico', which was made using only a single image of overlaid circles inside triangular masks. I'll also explain some useful techniques that will help you make nice details and add final touches to your images.
